24号就要考了,今天才写了第一篇issue

“Employees should keep their private lives and personal activities as separate as possible from the workplace.”

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

The speaker asserts that employees should keep their private lives and personal activities as separate as possible from the workplace. Theoretically, this assertion sounds reasonable, however, is practically inapplicable. Why? You may wonder. Although employers have the right to ask employees to pay all attention to business it is thoughtless to do so.

First of all, if we put our feet into the shoes of employers we will find that permitting employees dealing with private things at work place will increase the operation cost. Primarily, the labor costs will be raised. Because employees using their work time to deal with their private things means the time and the attention they pay to the business is discounted. Just as no consumer will accept services with deficiency, so will employers hold grievance if the employees bog themselves in private things at workplace. Furthermore, the cost for machine depreciation and maintenance and the outlay will be enhanced. For it is inevitable that when the employees are dealing with personal activities they are occupying the resources at the workplace, such as telephone, fax machines, stationary and so forth. Last but not least, dealing with private things reduces the efficiency of employers and lead to errors in working. If the employees focus most of their attention on their private businesses they frequently neglect their work; eventually, a lot of errors and carelessness are generated which might considerably damage the business of employers.

Furthermore, it is impossible for the employers to keep their employees from private lives. Employees can not be independent from their own social context. They usually have some private things which can not be finished in their spare time, and have to use workplace to deal with. Under this circumstance the prohibition would incur nothing but great grievance and dissatisfaction. And the employers would be regarded as ruthless vampire, cruel capitalists by the employee. Once they employers lost the loyalty of their employees, it is hard to re-achieve it.

What is the best way to deal with this dilemma? In my opinions, I suppose that a set of flexible office regulations should be established. It sounds contradict, you may think. If they are a set of regulations how it could be flexible?  It is known to all that discipline is fundamental to all businesses; therefore a series of office regulations are necessary to administrate the office and any other workplace. But stiff regulations would lead to some serious problems. When the employers or their attorney execute the regulations they should make the regulations flexible. In order to protect the power of the regulations they should seriously punish the employees who took a long time and a lot of resources in work to deal with private things and damage the company a great deal. On the other hand, employers should permit their employees to do private things in work time.

In summary, from the above mentioned we can safely conclude that although the employers have the right to keep employees from private things, it is unkindness to do so. The only resolution is to make a set of regulations and executed them flexibly.
