请教一道语法题：

Accordingto surveys by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 20 percent of young adults used cocaine in 1979,doubling those reported in the 1977 survey.
(A) doubling those reported in the 1977 survey
(B) to double the number the 1977 survey reported
(C) twice those the 1977 survey reported
(D) twice as much as those reported in the 1977survey
(E) twice the number reported in the 1977 survey

答案是E，这里 twice同位语修饰20 percent of young adults

我的疑问是A： 1. 如果改成 double the number reported in the 1977 survey做同位语是不是也对？
2. 如果改成doubling the number in the 1977 survey 修饰整句句子可以吗？

If we look at this question from the perspective of the intended meaning: Actually, this sentence is a comparision sentence, it compare the number of the young adults in 1979 with the number in 1977, so parellel should be applied in here..

20 percent of young adults is a number, I mean assuming there are 1000 young adults, and 20% of them should be 200 young adults, right?
so number compare number, in this sentence, twice the number refer to number, so E is right. (in these five choices, only B, E mention the number, but since B is wrong....
