If the program you are attending belongs to Tier 5 or lower in our Placement Rankings, dropping out and so leaving that professor alone could be an option to consider. Reapplying to PhD programs can be treacherous and so is often discouraged; among the reasons is that the admission committee cannot but raise questions about the reaplicant's intellectual suitability for, or commitment to, an academic research career. That said, one with solid performance and proven research potential in his or her former program may well give it a go. There are numerous success stories out there. Research record could overweigh course grades; therefore, it is desirable that you be able to show one completed working paper with some real promise. Also, you need to be particularly careful in selecting refernece letter providers as any backbiting from anyone may doom your chance.
