It might seem plausible, at first glance, to agree with the argument in a letter from Central Plaza store owner that if skateboarding is prohibited there, they predict that business in Central Plaza will return to its previously high levels. However, in order to fully evaluate this argument, we need to have a significant amount of additional evidence. The argument could end up being much weaker than it seems or it might actually quite valid. In order to make that determination, we need to know more and then analyze what we learn.
The first piece of evidence we need to know to evaluate this argument is how total population changed in Central Plaza over the past two years. If total population in this area decreased over the past two years, then it is plausible that the number of shoppers in Central Plaza decreased over the past two years as well and then the popularity of skateboarding might not be the thing that the store owner should blame. So in this case, the argument would certainly be weakened. However, if the population increased in Central Plaza over the past two years, then it would strengthen store owner’s argument.
The second piece of evidence we need to evaluate this argument is the reason why many Central Plaza store owner believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in plaza. It could be that store owner saw these skateboard users threatened their customers so their customers felt uncomfortable and bought nothing. If this is the reason why store owners believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in the plaza, it would certainly strengthen this argument. However, it also could be that store owner hate playing skateboard so they just believe their decrease in business is due to the skateboard users by no valid evidence. If this is the reason for the argument, then the argument would certainly be weakened.
Another piece of evidence we need to know is the reason why there has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza. It’s reasonable to say that litter and vandalism will lead to decrease in the number of shoppers in Central plaza. But is it because of skateboard users that there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza? The increase in the amount of litter and vandalism could result from the increase of population or cutback in environmental project and not necessarily has anything to do with skateboard users. And if the increase in the amount of litter and vandalism is not caused by skateboard users, then the argument would be weakened. However, if it is, then the argument would be strengthened.
To sum up, in order to fully evaluate this argument, we need to know how total population changed in Central Plaza over the past two years and the reasons why many Central Plaza store owner believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in plaza and why there has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza.
