15) The following memorandum is from thebusiness manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.
Recently, butter has been replaced bymargarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern UnitedStates. This change, however, has had little impact on our customers. In fact, only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that an averageof 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servershave reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complainwhen they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers do notdistinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer toeither butter or margarine.
Write a response in which you discuss oneor more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation andexplain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presentedin the argument.

非常感谢!

Theauthor's claim, based on what really happened in the restaurant after thechange from butter to margarine, although at first glance is plausible, thereare more than one alternative explanations that can rival author's.

The author concluded the change has had little impact on the customerssince there were only 2 percent of customers who have complained about thechange. However, some reasonable explanations may be alternative. The first oneis that perhaps not all the customers have ordered the butter since the change, and they might even not know the change. Therefore, the number of complainsmight increase greatly after most of the regular customers have ordered thebutter which means none of the authors explanations is right.

And the second alternative one is that, not all the customers want tocomplain about the change in that they think the change is not a big deal, andthey do not like to waste the time and energy to talk to restaurant about it.What's more, they may think the new butter is delicious, which can totally takethe place of the last one so that they do not complain about it.

Another explanation will cast doubt on the reliability of the resultsfrom the servers. There is no official survey or test to record the responsesfrom customers, and there may be some mistakes and deviations in the answersfrom the servers. There is a big possibility that servers may want to reducethe complicated change any more and they choose to keep silence aboutcomplains. Another possibility is that servers do not care about the customersresponses, and they may just forget and underrate the discontents fromcustomers. So the author's claim that customers do not distinguish butter frommargarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarineis not the only two explanations available.

In order to make the memorandum more reasonable, the author should takefully considerations before making a conclusion. By adding what have beendiscussed above, the argument may be more convincing.

Furthermore, many servershave reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complainwhen they are given margarine instead.

这一点需要狠批,别人要butter,你给客人margarine。这种算欺骗,美国人最忌恨的。很多人并不会当面表达愤怒,但是从长远看会影响生意。
