Argument 88 题目:
The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Health Naturally, a small but expanding chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Our previous experience has been that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build one of our new stores in Plainsville, which clearly has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise equipment are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight-training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a program called Fitness for Life, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. ======================================================================================= 时间 30 字数 457 ======================================================================================= The vice president of Health Naturally suggests that the company should build one of their new stores in Plainville. He provides evidence that running shoes and exercise equipment are needed a lot in Plainville; and he also refers to the condition of some exercise clubs in Plainville as well as the compulsory Fitness for Life classes for students. He provides evidence above to convince us of the effectiveness of his recommendation, however, if some specific evidence is considered, his argument seems tenuous.
In the first place, the author says that sales of running shoes and exercise equipment are at all-time highs. While this evidence is deeply analyzed, the author failed to make the connection between the sales of these equipment and that of their products. It is entirely possible that although people in Plainville just like to wear running shoes in their spare time and they just like to exercise without buying health products. Some people just tend to eat more meat or soybeans that contain much protein, and they hate chemicals with nutrition. To make the argument more convincing and persuasive, the author has to provide more evidence indicating that people in Plainville will buy their products if they build their new store in it.
In addition, the vice president also asserts that weight-training and aerobics classes are always full these days. But this doesn't infer that the majority of people in Plainville will be enrolled in it. There is high chance that the number of those exercise classes in Plainville are small, which means although the classes are always full, but the capacity of these classes are small and as a consequence, only a small part of people take those classes. Ignoring the evidence about the percentage of the people who are in the exercise classes makes the argument lack of reasonability.
Finally, granted that the author provides much more specific information to strengthen the evidence he presents, there is also another flaw in his argument. He claims that Plainville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a program named Fitness for Life, which emphasizes the significance of regular exercises. As we know, education is just a way to encourage people, but is not truly compelling the students to exercise. Therefore, children's not follow the teachers' suggestion is likely. Unless the vice president says that the children will participate in regular exercises deriving from the classes, readers will challenge the author's reasoning process.
To sum up, the vice president's reasoning process is good, but many flaws will weaken the argument if some specific evidence is considered. Only by providing more information that will strengthen the reasonability of the argument can we accept the author's suggestion and inspire new stores in Plainville. |
