55. In order for any work of art—for example, a film, a novel, a poem, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

With the development of economy and improvement of life level, lives are rife with art, with various forms-such as films, novels, poems, songs-no matter how high quality they are, and no matter what degree they are accepted by people. When it comes to arts, a host of different opinions are held by various people. Should arts be understandable to most people? Admittedly, some people may give a positive answer with the reason that arts are methods for expressing feelings. However, exploring the spiritual world, arts cannot be understandable to everyone on the basis that people share distinctive views to see the whole world, and have various mental experience.
On one hand, as such special forms to express feelings, arts need to be understandable. Everyone are long for other's praise and understanding, let alone artist. They find a way to exhaust their mental experience in a different way and desire a figure to share the same feelings that accord with theirs. After all, to some artist, if no one can understand an abstruse poem or a meaningful film, they may be quite frustrated and depressed; otherwise, they may go into raptures at the mere mention of the same opinion and feeling being blurted out by others. For example, Yu Boya, a celebrated musician in ancient China, go into rapture when only Zhong Ziqi can understood what his melody really meant, thus he destroyed his instrument-called Guzheng- when Zhong Ziqi died from disease. The only one that can make his melody intelligible had gone, he never created melodies. Consider that art can be understand as if arts are imbued with lives, most people can feel that kind of vitality; if arts cannot be understand, it seems that arts are become pools of dead water.
Additionally, engaging arts need copious money, in many countries, it is financial fund that support arts. Admittedly, arts could inspire people exploring their own spiritual world; art might make people closer to the real world; arts would reconstruct one's overlook to a better one. However, all these merits base on the assumption that arts can be understandable. As for the financial supports, governments are always long for some outcome that benefit most people from their fund to art, otherwise arts in their eyes are not worthwhile. For example, now Chinese government supports Beijing opera to close to the common people, and teaches people more about the history and spirits of Beijing opera, thus make more people be proud of Chinese traditional culture and cherish more about the inner meanings of Beijing opera. As a matter of fact, Beijing opera is derive from life, but higher than life, thus Chinese people can understand it and benefit from it, otherwise it is wasteful for Chinese government to support such kind of art.
However, on the other hand, even if arts need to be understandable, sometimes they cannot be understandable. No one will deny that the real arts is a method for artist to explore their own spiritual world, while their own spiritual world cannot be understand easily by others in that everyone experiences different things and meets various people in their lives. Most people may not meet the common point of thoughts between them and artists, thus leads to the different way to see a picture, or even few of people understand this picture, thus regard such arts as riffle. Paragon such as Van Gogh comes immediately to minds. His paintings cannot be cherished by people at that time, while after many years of his death, his paintings are accepted and receive much appreciation and comprehension. Viewed in this fashion, arts should be furthest understandable, but when arts cannot receive comprehension, leave them to time. Time will presents its magic to make them shine or flood it in the long historical river.
To sum up, in some degree, as for a special form to express ones feelings and explore one's spiritual world, art should be furthest understandable by most people in the more or less utilitarian views. However, when this kind of arts that express one's real feelings and present his/her comprehension of the world cannot be intelligible, just leave it to time, rather than inhibit it. |
