106. In most professions andacademic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge.
Writea response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree withthe statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Indeveloping and supporting you position, you should consider ways in which thestatement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerationsshape your position.
Is imaginationmore important than knowledge in most professions and academic fields? Iconcede that imagination is to be preferred anytime you can be stimulated yourthinking over knowledge that constraint you. Otherwise, I find the speaker’sposition troubling. It ignores the fact that a strong connection between theimagination and knowledge in developing research.
Theprimary reason for my disagreement with the speaker’s position is thatimagination and knowledge need not be mutually exclusive. In the first place, ifone adopts the view that imagination should be utilized in every field to achievethe perfect consequence without foundation and basic theory to support, thenthe outcome may be unpractical, unrealistic and impracticable------atleast tentatively. In the second place, in order to gain success inthe professions and academic fields one must combine the imagination andknowledge they learned together.
Anotherreason why I tend to disagree with the speaker’s position is that it flies inthe face of how to be creative. History informs us that, for better or worse,creative idea comes from imagination, and imagination based on the knowledgeone gained. Moreover, we could find out that the imagination express withouttheory foundation could not established long, also unaccepted by the mundane.In the development of an individual, the ideology of him or her must springfrom imagination and knowledge. Thus to assert the imagination is moreimportant than knowledge is to deny the significance of knowledge and theexperience.
However,I’m not to deny the significance of imagination. On the one hand, imaginationis a method to break down the constraints of former custom and concept, but thebook knowledge sometimes would imprison our thinking. Under the circumstances,imagination seems to be more important than book and knowledge from otherplaces to be easier to stimulate individuals’ creation. Consider architectssuch as Joslash Utzon who designed Sydney Opera House, Ieoh Ming Pei whodesigned Louvre Museum. Their designs are replete with creative andimaginative.
On theother hand, knowledge has the characteristic of inheritance and duration, alsocan be developed and modified during the utilization and carry forward. Withoutknowledge, imagination would gradually become fantasy and the effect ofimagination is totally discount. These architects are bound to have profoundknowledge, a powerful observation of life, an insightful comprehension and richexperiences. How could we say imagination is more important than knowledge?
Finally,lacking imagination individuals will tend to be rigid and stiff whether intheir own life or occupation. Meanwhile, lacking knowledge individuals willprobably get into an unrealistic and unpractical way in which they thought arefantasy. Most people in working ignored the pragmatic and objectivity would besuffered in the future. Knowledge is as important as imagination.
Insum, the speaker’s assertion could be developed into imagination is asimportant as knowledge. All the two factors are significant in everyprofessions and academic fields, are necessary means to achieving success,moreover, are the method to approach the truth and to better understand ourworld. |
