ISSUE 2: To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
When we talk about this issue, maybe it is necessary to clarify the meaning of a major city. In my view, a major city is a city where can represent some important characteristics of a society. Thus it is to some extent automatic that studying major cities is necessary since it can be beneficial for someone to understand the most important characteristics of a society. Admittedly, sometimes though a small city cannot represent an important characteristics, a group of small cities which have something in common may reflect an important characteristics. Therefore, in order to better understanding a society, one should be in a whole view by studying not only major cities but also observing if there are some small cities can also reveal some important characteristics of a society.
A society's important characteristics can be generalized from three fields: policy, economy and culture. One society's major cities always be a central political city, or where economy is thriving, or where teeming with cultural atmosphere. Thus when we discuss a major city maybe it is better to make a definition about which kind of major city it is: a political major city, a economic major city or a cultural major city.
From a political perspective, China is a nation which policy system is the people's congress system. When we study one of China's major cities-- Beijing, which is also the political center, we can find that it does tell us some important information about China's political characteristics. One can see a great building in Beijing called Great Hall of the People, which used as a meeting place for people's representers and many important decisions such as the nation's political system are made there. However, it may be to some extent arbitrary to say that it can wholly reflect China's political system and only if we take some small cities which from political view like Hong Kong and Macao into consideration,we can have a better understanding of China's political situation that in fact China's political characteristics is Socialism with Chinese characteristics which political system is applied flexible according to districts' particular situation.
In economic field, San Francisco always be cited as a strong evidence that the Unite States is a powerful nation. By studying San Francisco, one can see that its strut is information and technology production. Thus to some degree we can conclude that the Unite States is a powerful nation which is based on the development of information and technology. However, when it comes to analyze China's economic situation, it seems hard to make a conclusion if only studying some major cities. For example, Hong Kong, which can be called a major city since its economy is very prospective, is a city carrying out capitalistic economy, however, it doesn't mean that China is a nation which economical system is capitalistic, in fact when we take some small cities such as Yiwu, Yongkang and so forth which is central in Province Zhejiang into consideration, where also have an economic prosperity, we can conclude that China is a nation which economic situation is complex and the economic policies are applied flexibly for better developing the economy.
From cultural view, studying major cities of course is beneficial for someone to find out the nation's mainstream culture. However, it cannot represent the society's wholly cultural characteristics, either. For example, Qufu, where is hometown of KongZi and the source of its han culture, can reflect China's mainstream culture. However, when we take a group of small cities which have common culture, we can discover that China is a multination and there are many different kinds of cultures.
In conclusion, to understand a society's most important characteristics, it is better to take the society as a whole and studying major cities along with observing small cities which have something in common.
