13.Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study
Should universities require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study, as the speaker suggest? In a sense, I tend to agree that students gain varieties of knowledge is a good thing for students. However, the speaker begs questions by overlooking the crucial role of anticipated problems and unfairly given them a second priority. In my point of view, both students’ majors and interests and the financial and material capabilities of universities are critical for students to take courses, and an all-sided consideration is needed when deciding the precedence.
Admittedly, every course is interlinked with each other and interdisciplinary is the essential block to construct a whole knowledge system helping human to solve the problems which cannot solve by one subject. For example, my physical chemistry teacher told us physical chemistry is a subject that depend physical approach to solve chemistry problems. Again, archaeologists also use linguistics to uncover the veil of the sculptured culture relics.
However, blinding to require students to take courses which have less relationship with majors is against the meaning of universities existence. Universities are armed at cultivate excellent talents having independent mind. It is a process of knowledge output rather than knowledge input like shuttling back and forth between history classroom and chemistry classroom. In addition, students maybe weary of studying because of forced requirements. Even though students were willing to accept requirements, not all universities have enough human resources and financial resources to offer varieties courses system for students to choose. Meanwhile, universities would lack characteristics as a result of similar course offered.
For students, making most use of resources of universities is beneficial, it is no doubt. Nevertheless, in the short university period, just three or four years, it is very difficult for students to balance the major and minor, moreover, taking courses outside of students’ field of study. The parameters of students’ time and energy is limited, hence whoever could not reach every aspect of a matter. Although he made it, probably he would learn the skin of subject rather than deep research. Plus, students spend time and energy on plentiful courses which inevitably leading to have less time to think which plays an indispensable role in university education.
To sum up, universities should be a guide for students, providing information about subjects such as in which part it will relate with students’ major, encouraging them to take courses which would benefit for their career in the future. As a student, he ought to ensure what he wants to do and what he needs to learn to achieve the goal. Studying blindly is the worst choice for student to spend his the most flourishing period in the whole life.
