4. Scandals are useful because they focus our attentionon problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
Evidence becomes abound in contemporary society that scandals permeate at every corner and exert impacts on people’slife. Controversy surrounds the question of whether scandals are of use for their ability to focus people’s attention on something unusual. In my perspective, scandals are assuredly useful insofar as its function of supervision; however, more frequently they are too inquisitive to exhume people’s private life so that they are deleterious. It is obvious that scandals have some positive influence on the society. Firstly, it does focus our attention on problems that are not possible to be discovered and thus provide some underlying reasons for a certain thing. For instance, scandals revealing athletes going to pubs offers the reason why they lost the competition last night. Furthermore, fora society with bribe, plagiarism, and ever murder, scandals generate an ethos of supervising and then everyone could unearth malicious behaviors in the society, and hence better social ambience is created. Now Twitter has acted as a platform for scandal revealing, which provides people with more rights to speak. It is scandals that make the society more transparent and keep more unbiased people’s recognition of the society and its managers. However, more frequently, scandals have less to do with supervision, which requires people with quantities of internal information, than they do with rumors, propaganda, and entertainment. Increasing numbers of superstars’ scandals not only amuse people but also yield much lucre to media. To inflate the lucre scandals bring about, these scandals might be transmuted into rumors and even fake ones, and thus the ultimate beneficiary is media, who triumph to propagandize themselves. What’s more, the appearance of fake scandals will never be conducive to the society as whole. On one hand, scandals of officials’ bribe, or some “flying” funds, will shake people’s faiths in the health of the society, which are fundamental for leaders’ administration. On the other hand, the blend of genuine and fake scandals renders room for people to suspend the authentication of all scandals, and finally will result in people’s disbelief in both. Therefore, from this perspective, scandals can be poisonous to the credit of the society, credit on which effectiveness of the society depends. On balance, scandals are indeed useful interms of its function of supervision, while its weakness might overwhelm its strengths with regards to guarding society’s effectiveness. The nature of the problem in fact lies in a better social ruling mechanism pressing much more on the bad deeds of the society.
