LSAT-21-2-25

25.   The publisher of a best-selling self-help book had, in some promotional material, claimed that it showed readers how to become exceptionally successful. Of course, everyone knows that no book can deliver to the many what, by definition, must remain limited to the few exceptional successes. Thus, although it is clear that the publisher knowingly made a false claim, doing so should not be considered unethical in this case.

Which one of the following principles, if valid, most strongly supports the reasoning above?

(A) Knowingly making a false claim is unethical only if it is reasonable for people to accept the claim as true.

(B) Knowingly making a false claim is unethical if those making it derive a gain at the expense of those acting as if the claim were true.

(C) Knowingly making a false claim is unethical in only those cases in which those who accept the claim as true suffer a hardship greater than the gain they were anticipating.

(D) Knowingly making a false claim is unethical only if there is a possibility that someone will act as if the claim might be true.A

(E) Knowingly making a false claim is unethical in at least those cases in which for someone else to discover that the claim is false, that person must have acted as if the claim were true.

如果E 改为“Knowingly making a false claim is unethical only in those cases in which for someone else to discover that the claim is false, that person must have acted as if the claim were true.将at least 去掉,换成only. 这是不是答案?

I suggest that you do not change the question and choices. Choice with change is not original. And I do not think E is the answer even with the change anyway. What difference does it make from D?

You need to find the reasoning in the question to support the answer. E is out of scope either way.

Spot the question type: Principle

Argument core:

Premises:

Everyone knows that no book can deliver to the many what must remain limited to the few exceptional successes

People know = Books ---> No deliver to the many what must remain limited to the few exceptional success.

Conclusion:

Publisher should not be considered unethical for they made they made a false claim.

*
As long as people know the claim made is false, it is not unethical.

If its unethical, at least one person does not know the claim made is false.

Answers:

A. its not about whether its reasonable or not, its about whether they would truly believe in the claim to be true when it is not.

B. There are extra information added for the sufficient condition.

C. The argument does not even mentioned about anything relevant to suffer a hardship greater than the gains.

D. Which is, at least 1 person will believe that the claim might be true. Correct answer.

E. People do not necessary to " act " as if the claim were true. only if at least one person believes it might be true, it is unethical.
