TPO14 The lecture claims that salvage logging can be harmful to both the environment and economy. This claim is not in agreement with that of reading passage, which says such action can be beneficial.
To begin with, according to the lecture, the dead trees can contribute directly to the soil condition, making the soil more suitable for trees growing. The professor explains this point by the fact that the decomposition of dead trees can enrich the soil, so this process is beneficial to the future generation of the forest. The reading passage, by contrast, contends that the dead tree make the space for new trees so cramped that no trees can grow.
Another different point between the reading passage and the lecture concerns the impact of the insects. The lecture acknowledges that decaying wood is highly suitable for insects growing and there could be a lot of harmful insects such as spruce bark beetle, however, the lecture argues that in the past years, no record shows that spruce bark beetle can devastate the spruce trees. On the other hand, the professor also points out many birds and insects, which exert positive effects to the new trees growing, would appear as a result of the decaying tress.
Finally, the lecture states that salvage logging can not bring economic benefits for two reasons. One reason is that the transportation of the dead trees are too expensive to make profits. Another reason is salvage logging can not provide additional jobs for local residents because company should hire more experienced outsiders to finish this job, besides, the job can not benefit in long-term because the job is only temporary job.
TPO4 According to the lecture, the professor completely denies the reading passage's conclusion that dinosaurs are endotherms. She says that none of the three points in the reading passage can prove the passage's conclusion.
First, according to the lecture, the polar regions were much warmer than today when dinosaurs lived, and it was wram enough for dinosaurs to live even they were not endotherms. Besides, the speaker states that in the colder days, the dinosaurs in polar regions could migrate to other warmer areas or hibernate like other reptiles. So dinosaur fossils in polar regions can not prove they are endotherms.
Second, the lecturer gives us an alternative explanation about the leg position of dinosaurs. Their legs are postioned underneath to support their weight, not to run. The lecturer states that large size can benefit the dinosaurs, so they need their legs positioned underneath their body to support their weight.
Finally, the professor indicates that, although many dinosaurs have Haversian canals, they have features which show they will grow more slowly when the weather is cold, which is the features of many reptiles. Thus Haversian canals in dinosaurs cannot indicates that they grow quickly all the time, in other words, dinosaurs are not endotherms with the characteristic-rapid body growth.
