非牛，我觉得大家被中文翻译给忽悠了。大家看下LDCE的翻译吧～比较靠谱，希望能有所启发～

area通常有三个意思：
（1）a particular part of a country, town, house, office, garden etc
（2）the amount of space that a flat surface or shape covers
（3）a particular subject, range of activities, or group of related subjects
其中取第二个意思的时候，和size是同义的，此时可比。
只是显然像E选项那样用两个area自己比更加明确（让人不用去考虑area的含义），所以D选项的比较comparable to the size of Great Britain不是不对，而是不好。

那你觉得这题E选项的that指代的是什么呢？

gmatclub论坛上看到很多都说E选项的that of指代的是land area，这样的确可以解释，而且也不存在area和size可不可比的问题。NN是怎样理解呢？

对，是指代land area，比较结构里面that都是指代前面与之对位的东东的.
area和size是否可比的问题是指D选项
