were/was在这句话里强调一个过去时态。

这道题还是没有搞懂。大牛能不能来解释一下。为什么要用four times as many as there were. 这个were后面代表着什么，if it represents "one microPC for every 32 students", then it should be was instead of were不是吗？求解求解

这里应该是比较结构要前后平行的问题吧。A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were (computers) four years ago.
这个句子里面是microcomputer 和 computer（或microcomputer，反正是同类事物）比较。但是如果是DE的话，就变成了microcomputer 和 four years ago 比较。
这个是我个人理解，如果大家觉得这种理解有问题麻烦帮忙指出来啦！谢谢！
