The following is part of a business plan created by the management of the Megamart grocery store. “Our total sales have increased this year by 20 percent since we added a pharmacy section to our grocery store. Clearly, the customer’s main concern is the convenience afforded by one-stop shopping. The surest way to increase our profits over the next couple of years, therefore, is to add a clothing department along with an automotive supplies and repair shop. We should also plan to continue adding new departments and services, such as a restaurant and a garden shop, in subsequent years. Being the only store in the area that offers such a range of services will give us a competitive advantage over other local stores.”
The conclusion endorsed in this argument is that being the only center in the area offering this range of activities would give us a competitive advantage in the health and recreation market. Several reasons are offered in support of this argument. First of all, the author points out that their total sales have increased this year by 20 percent since they added a pharmacy section to their grocery store .In addition , the author reasons that they plan to adding new department and services, such as clothing , restaurant and a garden shop to increase their profits. At first glance, the author’s argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection reveals that the conclusion is based on some dubious assumptions and the reasoning is biased due to the inadequacy and partiality in the nature of evidence provided to justify the conclusion. A careful examination would review how groundless this conclusion.
In the first place, a conclusion may be weakened when another explanation at least as compelling as the original is offered. Common sense tells me that there are a lot of other ways in which pharmacy section, such as income levels of local people . If the personal income has increased in the same period that the pharmacy department has been added , then the increase may well be the result of people’s income rather than the pharmacy department’s adding . Higher income would offer a good alternative explanation that would weaken the original explanation.
In the second place, the author commits the fallacy of "false analogy". The argument rests on the assumption that pharmacy department is analogous to clothing in all respects. However, this assumption is weak, since although there are points of comparison between pharmacy and clothing .For example, the heath status of local people and the change of climate all affect sales in pharmacy, but are virtually in absent in clothing. Differences between the two clearly outweigh the similarities, thus making the analogy highly less than valid.
In the third place, the fact that happened this year ago is not a sound evidence to draw a conclusion that being the only store in the area that offers such a range of services will advantage them. The author assumes the same at different times. The other groceries would also add some department to make the services more various. Thus it is impossible to conclude that being the only center in the area offering this range of activities would give us a competitive advantage in the health and recreation market.
Finally, the author unfairly assumes that profits were determined solely by the total sales. While the total sales is a seemingly important element in determining profits .The assumption overlooks other crucial criteria in determining profits ,such as price of goods .
To conclude, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. Accordingly, it is imprudent for the author to claim that being the only center in the area offering this range of activities would give us a competitive advantage in the health and recreation market. To make this argument logically acceptable, the author would have to show the pharmacy department and other department which will add to the grocery have such similarity to improve the profits. To strengthen the argument ,the author should provide concrete evidence as will to demonstrate that adding the pharmacy department is the only and necessary reason to the increase of total sales .Only with more convincing evidence could this argument become more than just an emotional appeal. |
