The Length of MBA Letters of Recommendation

Hi all,

My recommender would like to know whether there's any limit on the total number of words for each letter of recommendation? (Columbia, Wharton, Stanford, Haas, etc.)

Could anyone help? Thanks a lot! : )

Hey there! I would be happy to answer this question. Generally, you don’t want a letter of recommendation to be much longer than 1000 words. Once you have crossed that line, the reader’s eyes are going to start to glaze over and stop paying attention. And we wouldn’t want that to happen! Shoot for 1000 words, and you will never be too long, or too short! That is, unless the schools’ applications specify any word limits…

However, I notice that some school would not require a full letter. Instead, they ask the recommender to fill in the blank of each question.
I think the 1000 words might be appropriate for a full letter consists of about 4-6 answers
So for each answer, what about the appropriate words limitation?
about 100-200?

Hey there—yes, that sounds just fine. I would look at this in terms of paragraphs and not necessarily words —I would recommend no more than three paragraphs for any given prompt. More than one for sure, and fewer than four for sure. JThis probably means no more than 300 words per prompt. Hope this helps…
