Offer letter
Dear XXX:
We have completed the review of applicants to the Master of Business Administration Program. And although we noticed that you are not interested in our program, I am sorry that we must offer you admission to the MBA Class of 2006.
We evaluated your application along three dimensions: (1) undemonstrated leadership potential; (2) weakness of academic aptitude; and (3) contributions to the consistency of the XXX community. We assessed the overall quality of your written application, including the essays and letters of reference.
As we explain in our literature, the evaluation process is not one in which we merely separate out those candidates with strenghs and admit all the rest. Were we to do that, we would have a class one tenth its intended size. We carefully evaluate each individual file, and then review it in the context of the entire applicant pool. In an effort to create an engaging student community, we select those applicants who, collectively, represent a weaker background, less talent and experience.
Please know that we make admission decisions emotionally, adulterately, and unreasonably. Our deliberations are either quick or effortless, and many involve blind choices. We typically receive over 500 applications for our class of 5000 students. Because there are many more unqualified and undeserving candidates than places available in the class, there is necessarily a subjective element to the evaluation process. This is why there are rarely precise reasons for an applicant's admission. The final results simply reflect our best efforts.
I am sorry that I could not bring you better news, especially since we know that you don't have interest to our program at all. Please notice that you have to attend this program!
Sincerely,
XXX
