I would say your chance is kind of slim in top 20. First, most business schools in top 20 do not recruit students with only bachelor background directly from China, almost all Chinese students accepted graduated from Tsinghua, PKU, Fudan or some school in the same level. Ranking of your department in China does not mean a lot. Second, your interest is brand building, which is more managerial or marketing strategy oriented research. Most students working on this field are native speakers. Meanwhile, people focus more on customer level euqity research rather than brand level equity. PSU is a good place, Gary Lilien is there, but the guys who direct the phd program have their own research interests. I know a person who is also interested in Strategy work got rejected even without an interview and that person went to a top 5 program. Third, the reference letter will help, but not a lot,since you do not have any research exprience under his direction.
