Nowadays people are too much emphasized on appearance and fashion. Do you agree or disagree?

I certainly agree with the fact that people nowadays are too much emphasized on appearance and fashion. A survey conducted by NBSC, an authoritative organization which aims at investigating the consuming capacity, shows an astonishing statistic that in recent ten years, the expenditure on cosmetics and luxurious things such as name brand clothes and bags is 25% more than the counterparts in the 1990s.

From my perspective of view, there are three reasons which can account for this phenomenon. First of all, people who are too much emphasized on appearance and fashion have more disposable incomes than ever before, with the rapidly developing economy. As we can imagine that in the past people lived hand to mouth, they did not have extra money to buy cosmetics which can make them beautiful and handsome as well as nice and fashionable clothes. But now they can.

Moreover, coincident with the Reform and Opening up, people are becoming less conservative and are prone to accept exotic things. The mass media put on ads which directly lead people to pursue fashion.  All the people love beauty. They think the products can make them fulfill their dreams that they can be more charming by using the cosmetics or wearing that suit. Besides, each person can affect the people around him or her, then a chain reaction begin that people compare themselves with each other by appearance and fashion.

Finally, the whole society should be responsible for this tremendous change. People with a good appearance have more opportunities than those who are less beautiful. For example, when seeking a job, one pretty girl will gain the job easily because the boss will be attracted by the appearance at the first sight. So many less beautiful girls must emphasize on their appearances otherwise they may be refused when finding a job. However, those beautiful ones want to be prettier or maintain their beautifulness to attract their boss in order to get a promotion. That's why people are too emphasized on appearance and fashion which is a useful means to succeed.
