is it better to learn broader subject than specialized in a special subject?

From a more personal than theoretical perspective, I would argue that taking classes in many subjects, to some extent, superior to specializing in one subject.

It might be an interesting theory for the majority, considering many people actually like to do some deep research on one subject. As I am concerned, the seeming controversial point is the priority issue in pros and cons in both sides. Thus, in the following discussion, I would like to reason and provide concrete evidences to support my viewpoint.

The first and most significant reason that we cannot neglect is that to learn broader subject offers a better way of open people’s mind in different areas, and people may even have the opportunity to find out what subject they are really interested in, which could be regarded as the main strength comparing with to specialize in one subject. A good example may be found in the case that LuXun, one of the greatest Chinese writers in the 20th century, who had study medical, mechanics for years, but chose to become a literature writer after graduated. With the experience of being a medical student before, his literature works have a rational sense and are perfectly persuasive.

In the second place, another convincing reason for my propensity is that, so far as I know, there are certain connections between subjects in different areas, even physics and philosophy can be inseparably interconnected. Under these circumstances, it is apparent that to learn a variety of subjects can help people with the comprehension of each subject and even to improve a creative idea in certain subject.

Sometimes people claim that learning too many subjects may lead to superficial interpretation. I would say, the one who learn broader subjects will develop the ability to do research, which is an essential part of study deep.

While acknowledging that specialization has its moments, I would emphasize the priority in comparing with the pros and cons presented by taking classes in many subjects.
