I'm not sure about Duke's HSM, but for Wharton HSM, all applicants have very strong background in this area. Most of them are directors and senior managers in small to medium health care related companies. Although you've been working in biotech company for 7+ years, however, your major role is biostatistics or clinical DBA (my guess ). You really need to polish your essay to show your good understanding of business operation. And I don't think your age is your major problem. Try to find out the answer from Duke, I believe you'll be fine next year. I was a happy camper in the IT filed until this June. After I decided to go for biz school this summer, Initially I thought a good GMAT will carry me through. That may be true for 2nd tier MBA schools, but for top 10 schools, they never lack applicants with high GMAT scores. I believe biz school is looking for people on the management track with potential. If a candidate doesn't possess such quality, he/she should show solid attempts in amending such deficiencies. Those attempts includes but not limited to leadership in community efforts, taking business-related courses, acquiring business-related certificates (CFA, CPA, etc). I realized this too late and therefore don't have strong material in my essays. I did learn plenty from this experience. Now I begin to really like the business aspects (for my long-term goal) and I am looking forward to fill myself up on accounting, marketing and finance knowledges. For people with similar interests, we can have a business book-club to collaborate and educate ourselves. MIT open course is a good place to get started. The Sloan courses are listed there and we can get textbook information and course syllabuses.
