grades(marks) will encourage students. Do you agree or disagree.

In our current education structure, grades take a significant role. It has provided us an appropriate approach to measure a student’s performance. At the same time, it also encourages students to learn. Unfortunately, sometimes problems go with this so called “encourage”. I would like to reason and present some of my views as follows.

With the increasing number of students, it is unpractical even impossible for a teacher or supervisor to pay adequate attentions on every single student, since there are nearly 50 students in every class in schools. In other words, if there is no other complementary solution, students tend to loosen themselves or even lose their future object due to lacks of supervision. Fortunately, grades provide students another supervision mechanism and supply teachers a proper ruler to measure a student's ability and learning. In the last period of the semester, the teachers give students a test or ask them for paper. Then the teachers grade their performance and after that the students will get feedback about their effort during the semester. It is a relative perfect form, since it provides enough equality to every student. Students will then rejudge their learning by marks and redirect their study. If s/he gets a relative low mark, s/he will find his/her deficiency and then try harder in the following term. On the contrary, if s/he gets a high mark which even others envy, s/he will get encourage and at the same time, the self-confidence augments which will lead to better performance. In a word, grades help to promote our students' learning by encouraging or feedbacks.

However, just as I mentioned above, it is "relative" perfect compared to other approaches such as directly judging someone by the daily appearance or performance subjectively. Sometimes, it will cause a problem, in that we can't guarantee every student gets the absolute equality. The test paper corresponds to the teacher's thought rather than the subject itself. Therefore, teachers will give the test regarding their own interest, and if that is the case, , certain students who cannot adapt the professor’s style and some top-students who may neglect some details but grasp the rest knowledge might not get the ideal marks. As a result, marks not only can't encourage our students but even worse, students will cast doubt on their own abilities and lose heart about learning. It is a dangerous and unexpecting result for our educators.

To sum up, we should treat marks objectively, not just say that "They are absolute good or bad". Only if we realize its merits and drawbacks and cope them appropriately, can we make our education more successful and benefit our generation.

偶不能给分。但偶觉得LZ的开头两段给偶的印象就不是很好。所以,偶估计LZ的文章不能达到LZ的要求分。不好意思。斗胆拍砖。
