Nowadays, there is a hot and crucial debate over the topic what is the criteria when awarding students. A considerable proportion of people believe that it is more important to award students for their effort, while others oppose that standpoint; they deem that others criteria, for example, their achievement, should be better. If facing the problem, I would probably vote for the latter opinion. Among countless reasons or facts that can strengthen my viewpoint, I will present the most consequential and conspicuous ones here.
First of all, achievement of a student, in most cases, is related to his effort. It is hard to imagine someone achieve a high grade without effort. Take my own experience for example. When I was in high school, my classmates who were awarded every year ascribed their achievement to their hard working. It does not come singly but in pairs that statistical reports conducted by experts have demonstrated that those who obtain outstanding grades always devote themselves to their studies. Therefore, those students deserve their awards.
Furthermore, behind my preference lies an equally important fact that effort is extremely difficult to evaluate, while evaluation of grades is much easier. Should a student studies all day long but doesn't get a good grade be awarded? Not really. He is diligent enough, however, perhaps he doesn't use the right method to study; or even worse, he just pretends to be industrious to be awarded. On the contrary, students who get high scores probably have found appropriate ways to gain what should be learned. Hence, it is more reasonable to award the students who get high grade instead of those who just work hard.
Superior as it is, awarding students for their achievement also has some demerits. For instance, it may result in cheating on tests, since a high score will bring award to someone. Nevertheless, the advantages of awarding students for achievement outweigh its disadvantages.
In conclusion, despite some minor drawbacks, awarding students for their achievement, compared with for their effort, is a wise and safe choice when rewarding students, for those who get high grades often try their best and their achievement is easier to evaluate. |
