TWE009 A small town vs. a big city When being asked whether I like a big city or a small town, I am always not hesitated to give my immediate answer that my preference is all the time a metropolis like Shanghai, my hometown. Despite some so-called merits when compared with a big city, such as a more peaceful lifestyle, lower pressure of work, less polluted environment, simpler interpersonal relation, a small town is never able to provide an ambitious young man eager for success with everything needed. However, a big city possesses an all-round environment full of chances and challenges. In almost every world-famous big city, there must be one or two universities equally well-known as the city itself. Colombia University in New York, University of London, and the University of Tokyo exemplify those metropolitan universities which enjoy worldwide reputation. Every year, these universities attract thousands of elite students, who will probably become the leaders of next generation, from all over the country and from foreign countries. Campus life at those universities provides students with first-rate education as well as opportunities to meet with famous figures from all walks of life, to exchange ideas with the most creative counterparts of their age, and to develop a personality that adapts to contemporary competitive society. Such experience better prepares the students for their future professional career. A big city is always a paradise for international companies to invest in. Consequentially, there is a broad stage for young elites to realize their ambitions. Companies act as the media linking the promising employees to their ultimate goals and, in return, are rewarded with rapid growth in profit by an excellent staff that can be found in big cities. The formation of such a win-win situation has made a big city into a great magnet that draws both splendid intellects and aggressive companies at a progressively increasing pace. Those who intend to establish their own businesses can also discover good chances in big cities where market, client, and capital can be easily accessed. In the circle of small business owners, an atmosphere of coexistence spreads on the basis of mutual competition and cooperation. Why successful international companies are always inclined to set up branches in big cities is not limited to the advantages mentioned above. Reasons also lie in that transportation, municipal utility, medical service, and other public services like such are well-developed in big cities. Furthermore, those factors in turn serve the aim of attracting more and more elites and big companies to reside in big cities. A small town may be the heaven for an accomplished person to enjoy his retired life in peaceful surroundings, whereas a big city is more like an arena for a young competitor to achieve his glorious championship.
