I'm an engineer and I interviewed with a guy who is a company president. There is virtually no common gound between us but the interview went through all right. I can't tell whether I gained or lost points there since I was eventually dinged by the school. However, we never had problem to find topics. As a matter of fact, you probably won't realize how fast time flies, and the biggest challenge is how to make all your points within the given time frame, which is always too short. The bottomline is, the interviewer is supposed to run the show, so it's not your job to find topics. Actually, my interviewer showed interests on my graduate school research project, so we talked about that for a few minutes.
Take it easy. Be real familiar with every fine detail on your resume because you never know where your interviewer wants to dig deep. More than likely, you will be so busy addressing your "must make" points and never have a chance to worry about how to keep the conversation flowing. |
