Theme and structure
BG1: For me personally, I structured the essay in three parts: 1) a deeper exploration on my personality, crafted around a childhood story 2) my most challenging leadership story at work and how I overcame the challenge 3) my career goals and ambitions post graduation, based around industry trends. Everyone's way of structuring the essay can be different, but it will largely touch on these three themes. For my partner who also got into HBS, while they didn't structure it into three sections, they covered these three themes. Instead of having three distinct sections with a bolded heading separating each section, they had one continuous story wrapped around a theme of justice and helping others. It started from their childhood, and moved into a leadership story at work, and then lastly into their career aspirations.

Advice/tips:
- Start with an outline. the hardest part was not figuring out what the include, but what to leave out. There are so many directions these essays can go in, so it's more efficient to start with bulletpoints of things you want to write, and then cut down and choose the stories you think would round out your application the best.
- Don't take too long. it took us about ~1 months to write and finish the essay, and about ~5-7 drafts for each person. Don't spin on the essay too much, remember the 80/20 rule.
- Get 1-2 people to look at it. Getting an HBS alumni to walk through it with me in detail was very helpful as it allowed me bounce some ideas off of them and brainstorm together.
- Don't focus on grammar early. It's better to write with imperfect English, and then give it to an English native speaker to polish the essay, then to spend a ton of time writing the perfect essay from the beginning. You'll be wasting time perfecting sentences when maybe the entire story should be swapped with another one that is better fitted to your application. Always start rough, and then get more precise.
That's all we can think of for now. We are offering essay editing services for the summer, so reach out if you're looking for advice or help!
