计划申请19/20年的MBA，目标M7，如下背景是否有戏&该如何提升，或者什么样的定位比较合理。望各路大神指教~~

本科：香港城市大学 GPA 3.6/4.3 First Class Honor
工作：3年四大审计；2年四大Advisory TS组并购财务尽职调查
证书：HKICPA；CFA Level I
GMAT: 750
目标：短期--知名国际PE机构的前台职位；长期--文娱行业创业

理想是去做文娱行业的PE，然后再到文娱实业去工作

I DO however need more info from you. Specifically about what you have done at work, what leadership, what successes, what goals.

Also, any information about volunteer work, or extra curricular activities would be verrrrry helpful.

The major question for me, regarding your current story is learning about your desire to transition from finance to entertainment. It is certainly possible, but it’s important to have a solid story there!

Thanks for your time and suggestions!

For leadership I think I'm a little inexperienced in this area, as I was just promoted to manager role and seldom lead a job independently before that. While I can lead myself in a project very well and make positive influence my teammates. Would that be counted as a kind of "leadership"? And why MBAs attach great importance of "leadership"?

As a financial due diligence analyst in investment project, my success mainly represents to help our client to identify various risks in their attempted investment, and with our findings our client can better design their investment/develop valuation model/construct the deal documents to address these risks, so as to make their investment more valuable. E.g. I helped a PE to identify a fraud of their potential target company, and such fraud has never been revealed by the auditors. Our client decided to not to invest in such company because the true performance was not as good as what the false financial statement had presented.

But I am still not satisfied regardless of my success gained and value delivered to my client, during the work I feel I'm more interested in work related to real "business", e.g. whether the company is good or not from business sense, whether the industry the company engaged in is promising or not, etc. And I'm more interested to get engaged in a broader deal cycle, e.g. from the industry research, potential target company selection, valuation, due diligence, deal negotiation, and post-deal management, rather than just financial due diligence which is a small step in a whole deal process. With my close cooperation with PE institutions, I find my true interest is to work as any investment analyst in a PE institution. Therefore I want to apply MBA, hopefully the knowledge, platform and network could help me to switch my career to the PE industry.

I regularly took volunteer activities organised in my company, including teaching English in less developed village, took the disabled children to concert, etc. As I feel with the high speed development of economy in China, the social inequality becomes increasingly serious in China, therefore I want to help those who are less lucky and provide more caring/warm to them.

Could you give me more suggestions about my weakness in the application in M7? Especially my career goal, as I heard that PE prefers candidates with specific industry knowledge and industry backgrounds, I know I'm a little weak in that and wondering how MBA could help me?

Sorry I missed out a point about switching from finance to entertainment. That is a long-term goal, as I am personally very interested in culture & entertainment activities, and these industries in China are undergone significant changes, a lot of mergers and acquisitions happened to reshape these industries. But currently, the industries are lacking orders, and lacking good quality products and talents. So personally I hope to contribute to this industry and reshape the industry to make it more healthy and prosperous.

Ideally I hope to achieve this goal through entering PE specialized in entertainment & culture industry. And with couples years experience, after I accumulate enough knowledge and resources, I hope to start my own business in this field. But currently I don't have a clear plan about it, so that is also a reason for me to study an MBA, as I want a broader network and consult people with such background about how I can achieve my goal.

Hello there Adeline!
Thanks for the very long and detailed message.

So let’s start with leadership - Since leadership/management is the focus of every MBA, you want to do as much as possible to show that you have some, or at least the promise of some in your past. This is first and foremost leadership of PEOPLE - It can be management, but also other things, like inspiring people, building teams hiring and recruiting, training and mentoring… Things like that. So we want to take whatever we can get from your profile and use it to boost your candidacy.

Next regarding your goals: they need some work, and here are a few things to think about:
1. PE - Why do you REALLY want to go into PE? I mean you have good experience in M&A. Why not continue??? The problem with PR is that everyone wants to do it because its’ the most prestigious and highly paid Finance job, but of course what is the advantage of having the same goals as everyone else?

2. I do find your media and entertainment goal interesting, but right now I’m not sure about the story arc. Is it really believable to go to regular finance PE and then to move to entertainment (where you will for sure make less money)???? And if you REALLY love the media business, why wouldn’t you aim for it immediately?

So this needs to be worked on. There’s nothing “Bad” or impossible, it just needs more thought and clarity.

In terms of weaknesses, I just think you could have more volunteer work, and highlight more leadership, but these would be relatively minor weaknesses as far as that goes.
