I am a resident of  China, a country which has undergone a drastic development in the past century. During the 100 years, some discoveries have played important role for the progress, among which the discovery of petroleum has been regarded as a momentum and has been most beneficial for people in my country.

The major reason for my perspective is that the discovery of petroleum spurs the economic development in China. Before 1960, all the petroleum in China was greatly dependent on importation, which presented formidable obstacle for the consumption. Thanks to the discovery of Da Qing Petroleum Field and other petroleum fields thereafter, petroleum has been no longer a rare resource in China. In addition, the products of petroleum such as fibre and plastic, bring about a diversity of industries. The emergence of these industries provides people with daily necessity and offer more job opportunities as well.

The other reason accounting for my concern is that petroleum is much more economical than any other natural resources. Compared with coal, petroleum can be compacted and consequently occupies less space, which acts a a contributor to the relatively low cost in transportation. What is more, less wastes are emitted in the process of manufacturing for petroleum, which saves cost for environmental protection.

Of course, we can not deny that the discovery of the petroleum made the outbreak of war much easier than in the past. But the benefit that petroleum brings to people greatly overweighs its negative effect so that this resources will be carefully used and preserved in the long run.
