2) mba is just    mba. to talk about which industry or field an mba program is good at doesn't make much sense. it's not like talking about ph.d.

you are not going there    to enjoy life. actually I doubt you will have time to be     "overwhelmed in the crowd". Big city means more opportunities for employment and network, especially during recession

I might be wrong. But I think recruiters    would have favorable feedbacks to certain concentrations in different schools. Like Wharton-finance, Kellogg-marketing. Your school might not rank high, but maybe there is certain track attractive, or maybe not

I still believe UMD MBA has better chance to land a HP interview. If I am wrong, the whole MBA alumni network does not make any sense for me

ygatnc, i agree with most of what you said. i'd like to further clarify my previous points    to    make them clear.    


large cities might    give you    more opportunities to find a job, but not necessarily a good one. being in a large city might increase your chance to get interviews. yet, a job is not equal to a good job. for top positions, it doesn't matter where your school is located.    so for a top job, the benefit of a large city is only marginal, while the benefits could be substantial if you just want a job.


every school has its own characsteristics, or school ID, which is an instrumental attatchment students and alumni use to associate themselves with their respective schools. for recruiters, the difference margin among school IDs decreases a lot. a lot of recruiters i've talked to know which school's mba program is top 10 or top 20 but also acknowledge they've little clue about which field is strong at which school. firms do need people from top programs to be their specialists, for example, finance    experts from wharton or    marketing    experts from duke.     but i assume that's mainly reserved for phd students.


network is always powerful, and networking is the key to landing a job. but we might be at risk of overestimating the importance of network. the reason goldman recruiters like dartmouth mba graduates is not because they are from henry paulson's alma mater, but because dartmouth is a reputable institution. it doesn't surprise me UMD mbas interview with HP because the name of    Smith school speaks for    itself. prestige goes the first, then it's everything else including network.
