Issue 67 Some people believe that society should tryto save every plant and animal species, despite the expense to humans ineffort, time, and financial well-being. Others believe that society need notmake extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, tosave endangered species. Write a response in which you discuss whichview more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning forthe position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you shouldaddress both of the views presented. Shouldhuman beings save every plant and animal species no matter how much efforts wehave to make? The answer to such a questioncannot be put straightforward because a complicated issue like this involves somany factors that impact of each side has to be considered. As far as I amconcerned, our human have responsibility to prevent some species fromextinction. However, it is unnecessary to save endangered animals or plants at an extremely high cost. Admittedly, the extinction of some species results from human's activities, directly orindirectly. There is a no denying fact that along with the development ofindustries over the world, we do exert negative impactson environment where millions of animals live. Rivershas been polluted by the waste water dischargedfrom factories. A lot of trees have been logged by human beings in order toconstruct new houses. All of these, definitely destroyed the home to manyanimals, accelerating the extinction of them. Anotherthreat to the survival of other species is undue hunting. Passenger pigeon isthe most conspicuous example to illustrate this point. Therefore, wehave to take responsibility for the undesirableconsequences of our practices. Besides, even though under the circumstances that human activitieshave little to do with the endangerment of thesespecies, there exit compelling reasons for us to save them if we can. As we allknown, human beings cannot live alone in the planet without other species. They provides us with food, row materials for industries, andeven medicines to cure illness. By no means can we make progress without theengagement of other species. Besides, the basic biology knowledge tells us thatevery species play an important role in food chain. Though the effects of the extinction of even onespecies of animal is yet unknown, breaking the food chain on even on level mighthave profound ripples through all life on earth. Fromthis aspect, we are supposed to ensure the continuing existence of otherspecies in terms of ourselves survival. However,we have to admit that it is unrealistic for human race to save every endangeredspecies especially at a great expense in money and jobs. First, apart fromendangered animals or plants, there are many more important things we have to facewith. For example, even though our society advances at a high rate, many peoplein developed country are still exposed to thedanger of starvation and unemployment. A myriad ofhomeless children are waiting our help to take them home. Can we setaside their basic needs, while using limitedresources to save these endangered animals. Of course not, after all human beings' basic needs should be givenpriority in any cases. Insum, we have responsibility to save endangered animals because in some cases it is our behaviorsthat attribute to the extinction of them in some way or other. Also, to savethese animals or plants is to save our own future for the reason that the prosperity of human society hasan intimate relationship with survival of species whoshare the same planet with us. However, compared to the basic needs of people, the importance of saving endangered animals pales, thus it is inappropriate and impossible to save every plant and animal speciesat cost of interest of multitude. |
