I think consulting services can be helpful if the consultants are MBA graduates themselves. Many US schools also involve students in admission process, such as interviews, essay reviews. You may know the most about yourself, but consultants can ask questions that force you to think deeper and/or things that you've never thought of. Consultants can also help to position yourself realistically - not overconfident or too humble. You should interview the consultants, then maybe work on 1 thing together. If you are satisfied, get more services. I would not pay someone 4w in the beginning when I have no idea what to expect.
