When it comes to the availability of a college education, some people argue that it should be available to all students while others believe it is only necessary for the good ones to get educated in a college or university. Different evidences would be given from the two perspectives, all of which may sound reasonable. However, as far as I am concerned, college education, as a right of civilians, should definitely be available to all students other than a small fraction of them.
To analyze whether all students should have rights to get college education, we should first look into the essence of college education. College education, as an important way to break down the social ladder, is to enlighten various kinds of people and grant them the opportunity to get a better life. Otherwise, if education becomes the privilege of the minority, in fact it reverses the initiation of university education. Besides, ”good students” is a vague and unclear phrase to refer to. Does it mean the students who gain high marks or the students who are more obedient? A college is not a place for good marks but for the sanity and wholesome personality of a student. Therefore, to give college education to a minority other than all students contradicts the rudimentary aim of education.
Some people may argue that the educational resources are scarce and the job opportunities are also too limited to satisfy so many college graduate students. At first glance, these arguments seem to support those people who think colleges are places for good students. But let us think more about these points. Could the scarcity of educational facilities be ascribed to the increasing of college students? The answer may be no when the investment of government is reckoned on. As to the job opportunities, some people get that argument for lack of consideration of the trend of society development. Job opportunities are never abundant. What is the difference between now and past is that most job applicants are college graduates now while most of them were from high school in the past. This transition illustrates the development of our whole society rather than threaten the careers of most people.
From the analysis above, to give college education to “good students” is a parochial idea although it may come from good willing, and a university should be the place for all students who will attain a valuable experience in their lifetime.
