Nowadays college education is no longer a privilege belonging to the minority. And the trend that more and more people pursue their degrees in a college or university has existed more many decades. People attend college for various reasons including preparing for a decent job, obtaining new experience and increasing their knowledge and so forth. In my opinion, people are appealed to a college or university mainly by two factors .Whereas the first factor is subjective, that is, their enthusiasm with knowledge, the latter one is due to the requirement of a modern society, which is objective.

When Plato was giving his lectures in his academy (which may be the first college in history), the young people under trees with eager eyes were absorbing wisdom and knowledge. Although circumstances have changed so much as so many centuries passed, the initiation of college education and the main purpose to attain college education should still be closely relevant to the giving and receiving of knowledge. The development of society has clearly proved that knowledge is power and the driving force, and no place else in the world is better than a college or a university with so many mentors for young people as far as knowledge is concerned. In this sense, it can be said that knowledge is the source of development and college education is one of the most critical sources of knowledge.

Another important reason why people attend college can be ascribed to the requirement of the highly competitive modern society, in which most jobs needs solid training in college. Simple paperwork in offices nowadays usually requires linguistic and computer skills, not to mention those promising careers like doctors and lawyers. Admittedly, a college degree does not necessarily promise a successful person, however, a young person would have to confront more difficulties without it. Hence, most people are willing to get college education, and even continue to pursue graduate degrees.

Far from there being an inevitable conflict between the enthusiasm of oneself and the requirement of the society, they are usually allies, which make college life an exciting and distinctive experience in the lifetime.
