Round 3 | 04 Apr 2012* | 16 May 2012** | 31 May 2012 |
* Applications and Letters of Reference are due by 5:00 PM, Pacific Time |
Tell us in your own words who you really are. Answer essay questions 1, 2, and two of the four options for essay 3.
Your answers for all of the essay questions cannot exceed 1,800 words.
You have your own story to tell, so please allocate the 1,800 words among all of the essays in the way that is most effective for you. We provide some guidelines below as a starting point, but you should feel comfortable to write as much or as little as you like on any essay question, as long as you do not exceed 1,800 words total.
Begin work on these essays early, to give yourself time to reflect, write, and edit.
Feel free to ask your friends or family members to provide constructive feedback. When you ask for feedback, ask if the essays' tone sounds like your voice. It should. Your family and friends know you better than anyone else. If they do not believe that the essays capture who you are, how you live, what you believe, and what you aspire to do, then surely the Committee on Admissions will be unable to recognize what is most distinctive about you.
There is a big difference, however, between 'feedback' and 'coaching.' There are few hard and fast rules, but you cross a line when any part of the application (excluding the Letters of Reference) ceases to be exclusively yours in either thought or word.
Appropriate feedback occurs when you show someone your completed application, perhaps one or two times, and are apprised of errors or omissions.
In contrast, inappropriate coaching occurs when your application or your self-presentation is colored by someone else.
You best serve your own interests when your personal thoughts, individual voice, and unique style remain intact at the end of your editing process.
It is improper and a violation of the spirit of the Fundamental Standard and Honor Code and the terms of this application process, to have someone else write any part of your Stanford MBA Program application. Such an act will result in denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission.
If there is any other information that is critical for us to know and is not captured elsewhere, please include it. Examples of pertinent additional information include:
Qualitative accounts of your intellectual and professional abilities are essential to us. As we read your letters of reference, we hope to discover specific descriptions and examples illustrating your potential to make a difference in the world.
Choose individuals who know you well, and who will take the time to write thorough, detailed letters with specific anecdotes and examples, particularly of your leadership potential and personal qualities. We are impressed by what the letter says and how it reads, not by the title of the person who writes it.
All letters of reference should be submitted by the deadline of the round in which you apply.
For Your 2 Professional/Workplace recommenders
For Your Peer recommender
All 3 of your recommenders will also be asked to assess you on some competencies and character traits that contribute to successful leadership. ? Leadership Behavior Grid (updated for Class of 2014)

The application deadlines for the MBA Class of 2014 are:
Application Periods: |
Application submitted online by 12 noon Boston time: |
Notification of the MBA Admissions Board's decision: |
Round 1 | Monday, October 3, 2011 | Monday, December 19, 2011 |
Round 2 | Tuesday, January 10, 2012 | Thursday, March 29, 2012 |
Round 3 | Tuesday, April 10, 2012 | Thursday, May 17, 2012 |
Please note that each "round" represents a distinct period in which you may apply, not a succession of steps for your application. You may apply in one round only, one time in an application year.
Given past experience, we anticipate that many candidates will submit their online application materials very close to 12 noon on submission deadline dates. To avoid heavy server traffic and potential delays, we encourage candidates to submit application materials as early as possible.
Applications received after 12 noon on October 3, 2011 will be considered in Round 2. Applications received after 12 noon on January 10, 2012 will be considered in Round 3. Applications received after 12 noon on April 10, 2012 will not be considered.
To avoid overwhelming server traffic generated by the high volume of applications we receive, candidates are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible prior to the deadline of each round.
We encourage applicants to apply in the first or second round, as space in the class may be limited by the third round. In addition, applying in the earlier rounds will give candidates more time to address the following:
To apply to Harvard Business School, we ask you to assemble and prepare a variety of materials that will help us assess your qualifications. Remember, all materials must be submitted to HBS online. The following serves as a preview of what you need to prepare.
The application for admission consists of the following:
*Applicants to our 2+2 Program need only two recommendations and pay a reduced application fee of $100.
HBS will verify application information and reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is any discrepancy between the self-reported information and information provided through verification.
As an opportunity to present your distinctive qualities, your essays are an important part of your MBA application. You will be asked to submit your essays online with the rest of your application materials. Essays should be single-spaced. Please limit your response to the length indicated.
All applicants must submit answers to four essay questions listed below. College seniors applying to the 2+2 Program have different questions to answer. Those questions can be found here.
Joint program applicants for the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Kennedy School must provide an additional essay.
All application questions below are required.
Joint degree applicants:
Recommendations must be completed online. The recommendation form includes the following four essay questions, along with other types of questions.
HBS welcomes students from around the globe. The admissions criteria applied in evaluating international applicants are the same as those for U.S. citizens. All application materials, including transcripts and recommendations, must be submitted online and in English.
An international applicant is required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. All post-secondary educational institutions you have attended and received a degree from, including technical and professional schools, should be listed on the application form. The complete, formal names of the institutions and the title of any diploma or degree earned must be used.
When self-reporting transcripts for the application, all course names must be translated into English before submission. If admitted to Harvard Business School, you will be required to provide an official paper transcript sent directly from each college or university attended to World Education Services (WES), a third-party verification agency. If available, your school should send a transcript in English along with the original language document. The School reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission if there is a discrepancy between the self-reported transcript and the official transcript.
The HBS MBA Program is built upon an immersive learning experience that encourages public speaking, group discussions, and active class participation. To succeed, students must possess a highly developed proficiency in written and oral English.
Those candidates required to take an English language test must have received at least their unofficial scores prior to submitting their application. Both overall and component test scores must be reported on the application form.
All applicants must request that ETS (for the TOEFL), IELTS, or Pearson (for the PTE) send official copies of their scores to HBS.
To obtain information about these tests, visit: www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org or www.pearsonpte.com
Some international students may be asked to attend, or want to consider, the on-campus summer PreMBA International Program to make a smooth and effective transition to MBA studies at Harvard Business School. PreMBA International is an intensive learning acculturation curriculum offering integrated modules that help international students enhance their presentation skills, develop critical competencies and strengthen their effectiveness in fast-paced, rigorous HBS case discussions with peers from around the world.
The Admissions Board strongly encourages international applicants to apply by the second round deadline to allow admitted candidates ample time to address visa issues
Harvard Business School will consider only one application per year from potential applicants. All reapplicants, except those who were previously admitted to the MBA Program Class of 2013, are required to complete the current application in its entirety. This involves creating a new application. While previous applications may be retained on file and consulted at the MBA Admissions Board's discretion, a reapplication must stand on its own merits as a complete and independent application.
Reapplicants should be aware that GMAT or GRE scores from tests taken before January 1, 2007 will not be accepted, and TOEFL IBT or IELTS scores from tests taken before January 1, 2010 will not be accepted. All reapplicants must pay the nonrefundable application fee. Reapplicants do not have an advantage or disadvantage in comparison to other applicants.
If you were admitted to the class entering in Fall 2011 but were unable to attend, please contact Dana Scalisi (dscalisi@hbs.edu) in MBA Admissions for special reapplication instructions.
To be considered for admission, an applicant must have successfully completed the following:

Note:?MBA/MA–Lauder program applicants can only apply to one of the first two rounds. MBA submatriculation applicants can only apply for the third round.
To be considered for a round, you must submit a complete application by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the day of the deadline. No applications for Round 3 will be accepted after the deadline.
Background information includes: contact information (e.g., mailing address and phone number), date of birth, academic degrees earned, professional experience, and family information.
First-time applicants and reapplicants are required to complete the same set of essay questions.
What are your professional objectives? (300 words)
1. Reflect on a time when you turned down an opportunity. What was the thought process behind your decision? Would you make the same decision today? (600 words)
2. Discuss a time when you faced a challenging interpersonal experience. How did you navigate the situation and what did you learn from it? (600 words)
3.?"Innovation is central to our culture at Wharton. It is a mentality that must encompass every aspect of the School - whether faculty research, teaching or alumni outreach."?- Thomas S. Robertson, Dean, The Wharton School?
Keeping this component of our culture in mind, discuss a time when you have been innovative in your personal or professional life. (600 words)
All reapplicants to Wharton are required to complete the Optional Essay. Please use this space to explain how you have reflected on the previous decision on your application and to discuss any updates to your candidacy (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, extracurricular/volunteer engagements). You may also use this section to address any extenuating circumstances. (250 words)
If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, or questionable academic performance, significant weaknesses in your application). (250 words)
The Admissions Committee requires two recommendation letters, preferably from supervisors.
Please upload a one-page resume in Word. We are more concerned with what you have learned than in your length of time in the workplace. We consider functional job skills, breadth and depth of experience, demonstrated leadership and management skills, as well as potential for growth.
A nonrefundable application fee of $265 is required for the MBA and MBA/MA-Lauder programs. For details on how to submit the fee, please visit our online application.
Transcripts of all academic work completed at the baccalaureate/undergraduate level and beyond, whether or not for credit or a degree, are required. Grades or marks may be self-reported on our online transcript template, with official documents required upon admissions and matriculation.
All applicants must submit results of a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) that are no more than 5 years old, based on the date the application is received. Scores may be self-reported.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for non-native English speakers with limited exposure to English. The test may be waived by candidates who earned a baccalaureate or master's degree from an institution at which English is the language of instruction.
Interviews?are by invitation only, following a thorough review of the completed application. Instructions are provided at the time of invitation.
Joint MBA/MA–Lauder applicants must take a 20-minute Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) on the telephone to assess their language skills. For more information about the OPI and to schedule an interview, please visit the?Lauder website

Why does Kellogg have a two-part application??
Kellogg requires all applicants to request an interview. Submission of Part I of the application allows candidates to request an interview and designate their interview preference (on campus vs. off campus) prior to completing the entire application. Submitting an off-campus interview request does not guarantee an interview, however. The interview may be waived in areas of high demand or remote location. If an interview preference is not selected or if an on-campus interview is not scheduled by the designated deadline, the interview will be waived.?
What is required in Part I and Part II of the application??
Part I?
Part II?
One-Year and International Applicants?
We strongly recommend One-Year and international applicants apply by the Round 2 application deadline. Applicants applying in Round 3 will be at a disadvantage since the Kellogg School typically admits One-Year and international applicants during Rounds 1 and 2 to allow adequate time for relocation and visa processing. One-Year and international applicants who apply in Round 3 and request an off-campus interview may be selected to interview by invitation only

2Y, 1Y?& MMM questions?
Essay #1?
Essay #2?
Describe your key leadership experiences and evaluate what leadership areas you hope to develop through your MBA experiences (600 word limit).?
Essay #3
Assume you are evaluating your application from the perspective of a student member of the Kellogg Admissions Committee. Why would you and your peers select you for admission, and what impact would you make as a member of the Kellogg community? (600 word limit).?
Essay #4
Complete one of the following three questions or statements. (400 word limit)?
Re-applicants have the option to answer a question from this grouping, but this is not required.?a) Describe a time you had to inspire a reluctant individual or group.?
b) People may be surprised to learn that I…..?
c) The riskiest personal or professional decision I ever made was…..?Required essay for re-applicants only – Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (400 word limit)
Two letters of recommendation are required for admission.?
Ideally, one of these recommendations should be written by a current supervisor or manager. The second recommendation should be from someone who can evaluate the applicant’s professional performance as well as their managerial and leadership potential (e.g. a former supervisor, previous employer, client, etc.). If applicants are unable to ask a current supervisor or manager for a letter of recommendation, they should include a brief statement regarding their choice in the Additional Information section of Part II of the application.?
The application is not considered complete until Kellogg has received both recommendations. Submitting the recommendations through the school’s online application is required.?
Additional letters of support are neither required nor encouraged.?
To ensure that the recommenders can be contacted, please apprise the Office of Admissions of any changes to their contact information.?
Candidates using the online application must remit payment by credit card with the application and should not send the fee directly to Kellogg. The Kellogg School will grant an application fee waiver for candidates on active duty military status or U.S. military veterans who have been on active duty within three years of applying. Fee waivers will also be granted to candidates who are currently employed by Teach For America or the Peace Corps, or who have successfully completed their commitment within the past three years. Candidates who qualify for an application fee waiver must submit a formal request, before submitting Part I, via e-mail tombaadmissions@kellogg.northwestern.edu?and provide supporting evidence of their current employment or military status. Military applicants should submit a copy of a valid military ID card or Form DD-214 to verify active duty status within three years of applying. The Kellogg School cannot issue a refund after Part I and the application fee have been submitted.?
Kellogg requires applicants to list all colleges, universities and study abroad programs attended or currently attending. For each program, we require a scanned copy of the official transcript or an uploaded electronic version provided by the institution. Transcripts for study abroad programs or transfer programs are not required if the grades are included on the transcript of the degree-granting institution. Self-reported transcripts will not be accepted. Hard-copy official transcripts will be required upon matriculation only. Applicants to the JD-MBA Program who are accepted and opt to matriculate must submit two official transcripts — one to the Law School and one to Kellogg.?
Applicants who scan images of transcripts should ensure that all sides and pages of the transcript are included in the scanned document. Be sure the scanned version is legible. Submission of an illegible document will result in an incomplete application and possible delay in rendering an application decision.?
If academic records and diplomas are not issued in English by the institution, you must submit both the original record and an authorized verbatim English translation. All records must show the name of the institution, the dates of enrollment, courses taken, units of credit, marks or ratings in each subject, rank in the total class or group (if available).?
All applicants are required to submit a valid GMAT score. Scores are valid for five years from the testing date to the application deadline to which you are applying. Information about the GMAT is available at mba.com. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not accepted.?
The GMAT code for Kellogg’s Full-Time MBA is 6WZ-3J-89.?
Applicants should self-report GMAT scores in Part I of the application. The Kellogg School will record the highest score but encourages applicants to report additional scores if the test is taken more than once. If a test date is scheduled after the applicant wishes to submit Part I, the scheduled test date should be recorded in the GMAT Test section of the application. Updated test scores can be self-reported in Part II of the application. Submission of additional test scores after submission of Part II will be accepted, but there is no guarantee the new score will be evaluated at the time the file is reviewed by the admissions committee. Official score reports can be e-mailed to?mbaapplicant@kellogg.northwestern.edu.?
Please note, an application with no self-reported GMAT score will be considered incomplete until a score is received and will likely result in a delayed notification decision after the designated application deadline.?
Candidates must request that scores be sent to Kellogg. Allow three weeks for Kellogg to receive the scores. We recommend that candidates upload the official GMAT score report, if available.?
Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English is required of all Kellogg students. Classes and group work demand strong English language skills. A valid TOEFL score is required for all candidates who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. International students may qualify for an exemption if one of the following criteria are met:?
1. The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university in the United States.?
2. The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university where English was the ONLY language of instruction.?
Applicants who qualify for an exemption must provide the URL or exact page of additional documentation to verify English was the only language of instruction.??
The TOEFL code for the Kellogg Full-Time MBA Program is 1546.
Chicago-area applicants must request an off-campus interview unless applying to the JD-MBA program. The interview requirement will be waived for Chicago-area applicants who request an on-campus interview. On-campus interviews are reserved for applicants with less direct access to Kellogg.?
The Admissions Committee requires every applicant to request an evaluative interview. The Admissions Committee evaluates on-campus and off-campus interviews equally. The interview provides an opportunity for the applicant to learn about Kellogg. It is also an opportunity for the Admissions Committee to further evaluate an applicant’s level of maturity, interpersonal skills, career focus and motivation. However, the interview is only one criterion used in the admission decision. The interview is conducted based on the resume only. The interviewer will not have reviewed the application prior to the interview. Each applicant must bring a current resume to his or her interview. Off-campus interview candidates must e-mail a résumé ahead of time to the interviewer. All interviews will be conducted in English.?
On-campus Interview Request?
Applicants requesting an on-campus interview should wait two business days after submitting Part I to schedule their on-campus interview. Interviews may be scheduled by calling the Office of Admissions. On-campus interviews are conducted by a member of the full-time and part-time admissions staff or 1st- or 2nd-year student admissions interviewers. Interviews are conducted Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from September through April and on select Saturdays from late fall until early spring. On-campus interviews typically last 30-45 minutes.?
Off-campus Interview Request?
Applicants requesting an off-campus interview will be notified of their assignment or waiver via e-mail within eight weeks of submitting Part I. Off-campus interviews are conducted by the admissions staff or members of the Kellogg School’s Alumni Admissions Organization (AAO). Candidates will be notified of an off-campus interview assignment in one of two ways. An e-mail may be sent requesting the candidate to register for a Kellogg Interview Day (KID). The vast majority of candidates, however, will receive an e-mail notification with the interviewer’s contact information. Because applicants may not receive e-mails due to spam filters, we encourage applicants to periodically view the Check Application Status page on the Kellogg Full-Time website. The interviewer’s contact information will be posted on this page when an assignment is made. The candidate is responsible for contacting the interviewer to arrange for a mutually convenient time and location. While our deadline table does not specify a date by which the off-campus interview must be conducted, we strongly recommend the interview be completed within 21 days of receipt of the assignment. We encourage applicants to contact the interviewer immediately upon notification. We recognize delays in conducting the interview may result due to scheduling conflicts. If an interview will take place more than 21 days after the assignment is made or if the interview is scheduled to take place within three weeks of the decision release deadline, please notify the Office of Admissions ataaoadmissions@kellogg.northwestern.edu?so we are aware the interview has been scheduled. One-Year and international applicants who apply in Round 3 and request an off-campus interview may be selected to interview by invitation only.?
Interview Waiver?
The Office of Admissions will make every effort to assign an off-campus interview to each candidate who requests one. However, in areas of heavy demand or remote location, candidates may be offered an interview by invitation only or receive an interview waiver. Waivers have no negative impact on one’s candidacy. Each year, many applicants who receive waivers are admitted to Kellogg. If an interview is waived, candidates should not attempt to schedule an on-campus interview. All applicants may make one interview request only.
Phone Interview?
If an off-campus interview request is waived, the admissions office may contact the candidate to schedule a telephone interview. The interview may be used to gather additional information or material that will help the admissions committee make a final decision. Applicants who receive a waiver may not request a telephone interview.?
All Interview Requests Are Final?
Due to the high volume of interview requests, all interview requests (on- or off-campus) will be final. You may not change your request after submission. If you are unable or no longer wish to interview, please contact the Office of Admissions to cancel your request. We understand that cancellations may take place due to unforeseen circumstances. A waiver will be granted and will not have a negative impact on one’s candidacy. Once you submit an interview request, you must be prepared to complete an interview as soon as it is assigned.?

Chicago Booth actively seeks a rich pool of applicants from around the globe. With four campuses on three continents, over 48 countries represented in the current student body, and an alumni network that spans over 101 countries, Chicago Booth is a truly global community. Read more about the International Community at Chicago Booth and?meet current international students.
All international applicants are required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. In light of the Bologna Accord, Chicago Booth will also accept all three-year international degrees to fulfill the undergraduate prerequisite for application to Chicago Booth. Read more about the English Language exam requirements.
We encourage international students to?apply for admission in Rounds One or Two. An early application will allow you sufficient time to secure a student visa should you be admitted. While we recommend that international students apply in earlier rounds, there is sufficient time for students to apply for and secure a visa in Round Three.
Chicago Booth provides financing opportunities for all students regardless of their citizenship, with or without a co-signer. More information regarding the program will be made available to students via the admitted student's website upon admission to the program.
There are also several scholarships & fellowships available to international students. Read more about?scholarships and fellowships.
Should an offer of admission be extended and accepted, international students are eligible to apply for either an F-1 or J-1 Visa. To meet the eligibility requirements for a student visa, international students must show proof of equivalent academic documents (diplomas), results from the TOEFL/IELTS examination (please?review the English Language Exam Requirements?for waiver eligibility), and financial resources to pursue their course of study. Detailed information regarding the requirements and application process to obtain a student visa is sent to admitted students in the spring.

At Berkeley-Haas, our distinctive culture is defined by four key principles — question the status quo; confidence without attitude; students always; and beyond yourself. We seek candidates from a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, and industries who demonstrate a strong cultural fit with our program and defining principles. Please use the following essays as an opportunity to reflect on and share with us the values, experiences, and accomplishments that have helped shape who you are.(Learn more about Berkeley-Haas' Defining Principles).
International applicants are those who, at the time they submit an application, either:
International applicants should follow the same procedures detailed thus far, as well as those listed below.
The minimum graduate admission requirement includes a bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution. Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary levels.
Applicants are required to submit official records from each academic institution attended after secondary/high school. All official academic records must be issued in the original language and accompanied by English translations prepared by the issuing institution.
Applicants who received their degrees in countries other than the US, UK, Australia, or English-speaking Canada are required to take the TOEFL exam or the IELTS. This includes applicants with degrees from Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and most European countries. Only applicants who have completed a full year of US university-level coursework with a grade of B or better are exempt from this requirement. Residence in the US does not waive this requirement.
Your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 570 for the paper and pencil test, at least 230 for the computer-based test (CBT), or at least 68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). The average total score of admitted students entering in 2010 is 110 on the iBT. To have your exam results sent to Berkeley's Full-Time MBA Program, list institution code 4833 and department code 02. If you have taken the IELTS, a band score of 7.0 is the minimum required for consideration. For fall 2012 admission, we only accept official scores from exams taken on or after June 1, 2010.
Resources for international students
If you have submitted an application to the program within the past two years, but were not admitted or did not register, you are required to complete and submit the following portions of the online application:
Updating any other application materials is optional, although the Admissions Committee does note the effort that candidates put into their reapplication.
We strongly recommend that you submit a statement outlining how you have improved your candidacy since your last application, as the Admissions Committee will be looking for substantive change in your qualifications. You can use the optional essay question to provide this information. In addition, you are encouraged to submit one or two new letters of recommendation.
If you have taken the GMAT and TOEFL again, ask the Educational Testing Service to forward the new official scores to the Haas School and note your new score on the Test Score section of the application.
Early Decision: October 5, 2011
Merit Fellowship Consideration: January 4, 2012
Regular Decision: April 11, 2012
October 5, 2011
Columbia Business School students may enroll in either August or January. The two paths, each comprised of four terms, merge in the fall of the second year to complete electives as a single class. The paths are identical in terms of competitiveness of admissions, academic rigor, and student resources, however they differ in terms of timing and the opportunity to complete a summer internship.
About 70 percent of Columbia MBA students begin their studies in the fall term. After mandatory orientation in the second half of August, regular classes begin in September. Most August-entry students complete a summer internship between their second and third terms.
The August entry has two review periods — early decision and regular decision. Because the School uses a rolling admissions process, it is always to your advantage to apply well before the deadlin
Early Decision
Regular Decision
Students who do not want or need an internship may consider beginning their MBA studies in January and completing their second semester of classes during the summer. A January start may be ideal for students who wish to remain in the same industry after graduation or pursue entrepreneurial interests. About 30 percent of students enter in January.
Please note that there is no early decision option for January entry and that, due the timing of the application cycle, January-entry applicants are not eligible for merit fellowship consideration. The Admissions Office begins reviewing applications for January entry once the application becomes available in May. The final application deadline is in early October.
We will begin evaluating complete* January and September Early Decision applications upon submission.
We will begin evaluating complete* September Regular Decision applications in December 2010.
*Applications are considered complete only when all required materials have been received.
Applicants must complete one short answer question and three essays.
What is your post-MBA professional goal? (200 characters maximum)
Considering your post-MBA and long term professional goals, why are you pursuing an MBA at this point in your career? Additionally, why is Columbia Business School a good fit for you? (750 words maximum)
Describe a life experience that has shaped you. The goal of this essay is to get a sense of who you are, rather than what you have achieved professionally. (500 words maximum)
For the third essay, please choose one of the following three options:
An optional fourth essay will allow you to discuss any issues that do not fall within the purview of the required essays.
Rather than answer the first essay question above, current Knight-Bagehot Fellows applying to Columbia Business School should use the space allocated to the first essay to complete the Wiegers Fellowship application essay.
What are your career goals? How has the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship affected these goals? How will an MBA help you achieve these goals? (750 words maximum)
All applications require two recommendations. If you have been working full-time for at least six months, one recommendation should be from your current supervisor. The second recommendation should be from either a former direct supervisor or from another professional associate, senior to you, who can add personal insight into your candidacy.
If you are a college senior or have worked full-time for less than six months, at least one, but preferably both, of your recommendations should be from a person who can comment on your managerial abilities. You may ask a summer employer or another person who you feel can objectively assess your professional promise. The second recommendation may be from a college professor.
Recommendation questions include:
Please be aware, the Admissions Committee does require all application materials be submitted online, including recommendations.
Applicants who were educated in a country where original transcripts are not in English must send the Admissions Committee both an official transcript in the original language and a certified English translation along with proof of graduation. If admitted, you must submit an official copy of your transcripts as well as an official certified translation. Columbia Business School does not endorse or recommend any individual provider of translation services.
International students whose native language is not English must take either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the PTE Pearson Test of English. You may be exempted from the TOEFL or the PTE if you have earned a degree from an institution based in a country in which English is the primary official language and at which the official language of instruction is English. For example, if you earned a degree from an institution in India where the language of instruction was English, you still must take the TOEFL or the PTE, since according to the Indian government the primary official language in India is Hindi.
The TOEFL and PTE scores are valid for two years. Your TOEFL or PTE score must be valid up through the start of your MBA studies at Columbia Business School. For example, for August 2012 entry, TOEFL scores must be dated August 21, 2010, or more recently.
Be sure to self-report your TOEFL or PTE score when completing your application. If admitted, you must submit an official score report via www.toefl.org (Columbia’s ETS code is 2174, MBA department code 02). For the PTE be sure to select "Columbia Business School" from the list of schools provided by Pearson. The Admissions Committee will consider only your highest score when reviewing your application

Three essay questions must be completed before submitting your application. Prepare your essays carefully. The Admissions Committee considers your responses to the questions important in the selection process. Please respond fully and concisely using 1.5 line spacing. Your response to each question should be no more than 2 pages in length, with a font size no less than 10-point.
Candidates who applied to The Duke MBA between September 2010 and May 2011 are considered re-applicants. All re-applicants are required to complete the Re-applicant Essay in addition to the Applicant Essays.
All applicants have the opportunity to submit an optional essay to explain any extenuating circumstances of which the Admissions Committee should be aware.
Applicant Essays : Answer all 3 essay questions.
Today, companies must navigate through complex and interdependent issues. They must deal with health and security matters, environmental impact questions, and diversity and cultural concerns. Leaders need adaptability, imagination, emotional intelligence, and business acumen. Thus, Duke is in the midst of an ambitious global venture that will embed and connect us around the world, and we are seeking future leaders of consequence, who value diversity and collaborative leadership, and who aspire to impact the companies and communities of which they are a part in a lasting and positive way.
In an effort to identify, engage, and foster the development of future leaders of consequence, the Admissions Committee would like to get to know our applicants in a more holistic manner. We would like to know who you are, what has shaped you into the person you are today, and how you hope to impact both Duke and the communities of which you will be a part in the future. The essays are your opportunity to convey that to us. Please be open, genuine, and passionate. Share with us what makes you a dynamic, multi-dimensional person.
Optional Essay (not required)
- Describe your vision for your career and your inspiration for pursuing this career path.
- How will your background, values, and non-work activities enhance the experience of other Duke MBA students and add value to Fuqua's diverse culture?
- Why Duke? (If you are interested in a specific concentration, joint degree, clubs or activities, please discuss how you would contribute to these in this essay.)
If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Admissions Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, significant weakness in your application).
Re-applicant Essay
All re-applicants are required to complete the Re-applicant Essay. Please limit your response to two pages. Write an essay describing how you are now a stronger candidate for admission compared to the application you submitted the previous year.
We require two letters of recommendation for applicants, with the exception of re-applicants, who must submit only one additional recommendation. The most valuable recommendations come from people who know your professional skills and abilities. We encourage you to submit at least one recommendation from someone who knows you well in your current position and can critique your professional performance, such as a current supervisor. Recommendations from relatives or friends are strongly discouraged by the Admissions Committee.
If possible, we ask that you use your recommenders' work email when providing their contact information. Recommendations sent from a general email account (gmail or yahoo, for example) will be more closely monitored in our application credentials review process.
Please note that an application is not considered complete until we have received both recommendations. You are required to utilize the online Recommendation Forms associated with the online application.
About the Online Recommendation Form
You are required to utilize the online Recommendation Forms associated with the online application. Recommendations sent by mail or email to the Office of Admissions will NOT be accepted. The following questions are asked on the online recommendation form, and are posted here to help applicants select and prepare their recommenders.
- Comment on the applicant's interpersonal skills (effectiveness in establishing and maintaining relationships; working with supervisors, peers, and subordinates; willingness to work in a team environment).
- Description of applicant's peer group.
- What do you consider the applicant's primary talents or strengths?
- In what areas does the applicant need improvement or growth? If you have had the opportunity to provide the applicant with constructive feedback, please provide specific examples of the feedback and the applicant's response to it

If you are offered admission, there will be several admitted student events that you can attend throughout the late winter and spring, including regional events around the country and events in Charlottesville on February 10, 2012 and April 20-21, 2012.
The following is the essay question for the Darden MBA 2011?2012 application cycle:
Share your perspective on leadership in the workplace and describe how it has been shaped by the increasing influence of globalization. (500 words maximum)
The Darden School MBA application begins with a request for demographic information, address, education, professional history and so on. The instructions are straightforward and self-explanatory.
Applicants are required to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The GMAT is offered only as a computer adaptive test in the United States. Pearson VUE administers the GMAT, and Darden's program code is KC7-0X-86. We evaluate only GMAT results from tests taken prior to submission of the application. The highest score is used, but we do not combine scores from multiple tests. Scores are valid for five years. We do not require official test scores in order to process your application and get it to the committee for review. You may self-report the scores directly into your online application. If offered admission, you will need to send official documents. However, offers of admission are not binding until official scores are received. If discrepancies are found between self-reported and official scores, the offer of admission will be withdrawn. Darden will also accept a GRE score in place of the GMAT. No approval is necessary — just apply with the GRE score.
As much as 50% of a student's grade at Darden depends upon active oral participation in the classroom. The University of Virginia requires demonstrated English proficiency. The recommended way to demonstrate English proficiency is to submit a TOEFL score. Ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to report your TOEFL score to Darden. Darden's ETS code is 5820. The department code is 02. For more information, visit Frequently Asked Questions.
Please prepare a business résumé (as opposed to an academic CV) that includes your employment history in reverse chronological order, with titles, dates and whether you worked part-time or full-time. As part of this résumé, also include a similar education history that includes dates and degrees, listed in reverse chronological order. The résumé should not be more than one page long.
Use your best judgment in determining the appropriate length of your essays. The essay question fields are large enough for you to answer each question thoroughly. Use the essays to display your writing skills and tell us more about yourself. You will be asked to organize a persuasive argument to show us how you think about and approach business challenges. Emphasize those experiences, values and goals that are most important and meaningful to you. Be sincere and be specific. Tell us what particular experiences and expertise you will bring to the mix. View this year's application essays.
We require two recommendations that address the questions asked on our recommendation form. Additional recommendations may be submitted, but they should offer additional and valuable insight. Generally, work-related recommendations are more valuable than academic-related recommendations. All recommendations must be submitted electronically. After you have contacted the recommenders about providing the recommendation, complete the form on the recommender's page of the online application and check the "lease e-mail this person a recommendation request" beneath each recommender you wish us to contact. They will be sent an e-mail message with instructions and a web address to visit in order to complete your recommendation.
An evaluative interview is conducted by invitation only after your application has been submitted and reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Interviews play a critical role in our assessment of candidates and are required prior to acceptance into the program. An invitation to interview is a positive indicator no matter when you receive it. Candidates living in the United States must interview on Darden Grounds with a member of the Admissions staff or Student Admissions Committee. Candidates living abroad are welcome to interview on Darden Grounds, but are not expected to do so. International interviews are conducted by alumni or Admissions Committee members during recruiting trips.
We do not require official transcripts in order to process your application and get it to the committee for review. Applicants have two options for submitting a transcript. The first option is to scan the official or unofficial transcript as a PDF and upload it in the educational history section of the application. The second option is to mail us the transcript. If the applicant decides to mail the transcript instead of self-reporting the uploaded transcript on the application, we must receive it before the deadline. Our online system will not allow an applicant to submit an application without a transcript (either an uploaded scanned copy or the transcript received through the mail). Applicants who completed their education in a non-English-speaking institution will need to make arrangements to have their academic records translated and sent with the official transcript. All translations must be complete and literal versions of the original records. If offered admission, you will need to send official documents. If there are discrepancies between self-reported academic information and official transcripts, the offer of admission will be withdrawn. Offers of admission are not binding until academic records are verified.
The Residency section of the application requests information related to verification of residency to establish in-state status for Virginia residents. Residency status is assigned by the Virginia Status Office at the University. Visit the Virginia Status Office at the University or call (434) 982-3391 if you need more information.
While not a required part of the application, admitted international applicants are required to submit a supplemental Darden Request for Form I-20 outlining the financial resources available for their study in the United States. The Form I-20 must show that a student has the financial resources necessary for both years of study. Timely submission of the Darden Request for Form I-20 expedites issuance of the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for the F-1 Student Visa. An I-20 cannot be issued until the Darden Request for Form I-20, which can be downloaded from the Admitted Student Portal, has been submitted. All I-20 documentation must be original; no photocopies or faxes are accepted. The completed Darden Request for Form I-20 and supporting documents should be mailed to:
Darden School of Business
Admissions Office
100 Darden Blvd.
Charlottesville, VA 22903
A non-refundable application fee of $215 must accompany the application. Online application fees must be paid by credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Credit card payments are processed through Darden's secure server using ViaKlix. Also, the application fee can be paid by check, money order or cashier's check. For application fee waiver information, visit Frequently Asked Questions.
Founded in 1842, the Honor System is one of the University’s most cherished institutions. Based on the principle that University students want to be trusted, the Honor System helps create and strengthen a school-wide community of trust. Students who enroll at the University benefit from the freedom and security provided by the Honor System; every student must agree to live by and support the spirit of honor. Applicants who are not prepared to embrace this freedom and accept this responsibility should not apply for admission. If you have further questions, please call the committee at (434) 924-7602 or visit the Honor Committee website. Further information on the Honor System can be found in the Darden Record. Details of the background and operation of the Honor System are fully explained during Darden Orientation.
We expect that the information provided in, and for, an application will be valid and will accurately represent your qualifications for admission to the Darden School. If articles contained within the application are ascertained to contain invalid information or misrepresent your qualifications, sanctions will be taken, up to and including the revocation of the MBA degree.

Letters from friends and co-workers are not appropriate.
If you are unable to ask your current supervisor for a letter of recommendation then you may ask another work-related source, such as a client or a manager from another department who knows your skills. You might consider asking a former boss who has left the company. We are looking for a recommendation from someone who knows your work well, preferably in a supervisory capacity.

Describe how your experiences, both personal and professional, have led you to pursue an MBA at this time. What are your short- and long-term goals and how will a Texas MBA help you achieve them??
Limit: 900 words
Discuss a defining experience in your leadership development. What did you learn from this experience about your strengths and weaknesses as a leader?
Limit: 650 words
At the McCombs School of Business, you will be part of an active and diverse community. How will you use your personal strengths and unique experiences to enrich the McCombs community during your two years in the program??
Limit: 500 words
Please provide any additional information to the Admissions Committee that you believe is important and/or will address any areas of concern that will ultimately be beneficial to the committee in considering your application.?
Limit: 350 words
Here are some tips to consider as you are putting together your application for the McCombs School of Business.
The Texas MBA admissions committee carefully considers each completed application, with particular attention to personal essays, work history, post-MBA goals, undergraduate performance, letters of recommendation, extracurricular and community activities, honors and achievements and test scores.?
Personal characteristics that add to the diversity of the class may also be considered, such as country of citizenship, gender, family background, multi-lingual skills, race, ethnicity and socioeconomic history.?
Strong applications convey careful research on McCombs and enthusiasm for the program. All of these components are considered holistically; no specific weight is assigned to any criterion and no formulas are used.
Essays are a critical means of assessing an applicant’s reasons and motivation for attending the McCombs School of Business, background and goals, communication skills and presentation skills.
We strongly recommend that MBA applicants have a minimum of two years full-time, post-baccalaureate work experience. The admissions committee is especially interested in the quality of professional skills as evidenced in applicants' level of responsibility, leadership, supervision and teamwork. The committee also considers the relevance of these skills both to the applicant's intended course of study at McCombs and to the career goals as stated in the essays.
The McCombs School has no mandatory minimum grade point average. For admission purposes, the Graduate and International Admissions Center calculates a G.P.A. using undergraduate, upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and any graduate work already completed. McCombs does not require prior coursework in management or business administration.
References should come from individuals who have a superior working knowledge of the applicant, be professional in nature and should speak to the applicant's professional work, qualities, career potential and potential to succeed in the classroom.
Public, community or military service, travel experiences, extracurricular activities, hobbies or special aptitudes, and any honors or recognition received are all important indicators of an applicant's motivation and character. The most appropriate place to include this?information is typically on your resume. It is ok if your resume needs to be two pages to accommodate this information. If it warrants more explanation, the essays may also be an appropriate place to discuss these.
Test Scores: Texas accepts both the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) and the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). All applicants are required to submit valid GMAT or GRE scores from ETS. Texas has no minimum score, but the test scores are an extremely important component of each application. You should address this application component aggressively. You are encouraged to take the GMAT or GRE early in your MBA application process so that if you do not perform as well as you would like, you have the ability to retake the exam prior to any deadlines.
You may take the GMAT or GRE as often as you wish. Texas will only consider your highest score -- the Texas MBA does not average test scores. Should you choose to apply using the GRE, simply apply with that score as no prior approval is needed.
McCombs full-time MBA GMAT code: 396-44-45
McCombs MBA GRE code: 6882
Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have their scores submitted directly from ETS to UT Austin. UT Austin’s TOEFL school code is 6882. TOEFL scores are valid for two years.
Applicants will only be granted an automatic TOEFL waiver if they have earned an?undergraduate degree?in a country whose only official language is English. Questions regarding waivers should be sent toTexasMBA@mccombs.utexas.edu.?
Having applied in a previous year is not considered a negative factor in your application. We evaluate your new application on its merits, and in the context of the new applicant pool. Consider giving yourself a fresh start when you approach your reapplication. Think through and reassess the essays, addressing any weak areas in your application. Add new information that may be helpful in the admission process.
All reapplicants are required to complete a new application, new essays, a new resume and pay the application fee. Although not required, we suggest you submit new letters of recommendation. Determine if other recommenders may provide a more insightful and thorough perspective. If you choose to use prior recommendations, please use the optional essay to let the admission committee know. Transcripts do not need to be resubmitted unless you have taken additional course work or if you applied more than one year ago.
Consider submitting updated test scores if you feel they can be improved. Regardless, as long as your test scores (GMAT/TOEFL) remain valid, you do not need to have them resent from the test centers. However, you do need to self-report them in the application. If your test scores are no longer valid you need to retake them. ETS mandates that GMAT scores are only valid for 5 years after the date the test is taken. For TOEFL scores, this period is two years. You will need to take these standardized tests again if the scores have expired or if you can improve your original score. The McCombs Admissions Committee only uses the highest submitted score in the evaluation of applications.
The admissions committee strongly encourages all applicants to visit the McCombs School of Business to learn more about the school's offerings from current students, faculty and staff.
Schedule your campus visit now.?

Admitted applicants in the Early Action cycle will be required to submit a $2,500 non-refundable enrollment deposit by January 6, 2012, in order to secure a space in the class. You should not apply for Early Action if you are not prepared to commit immediately to attending UNC.
Some applicants seek the MBA as a career enhancing tool to accelerate advancement in their current field. Career switchers want the MBA to help launch new career paths. UNC Kenan-Flagler recognizes each of these motivations as legitimate reasons to pursue the MBA, and we encourage both types of candidates to apply.
UNC Kenan-Flagler encourages you to assess your known talents and potential skills, understand your personal style, and confirm your values and interests. If you do this prior to beginning your MBA studies, you will be better equipped to navigate the many options the MBA program will provide. There is not enough time to do all the activities and take all the courses that will be available to you. It is important, therefore, to make your choices based on your own development plan. Think of the UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA application as a first step toward uncovering the unique attributes and goals that will inform your development plan. Please be thoughtful and reflective in your answers.
