又及:由于汇总工作量比较大,如果发现问题,可以随时给我发站内短信或跟帖说明,我会尽快调整。

Please note that each "round" represents a distinct period in which you may apply, not a succession of steps for your application. You may apply in one round only, one time in an application year.

Given past experience, we anticipate that many candidates will submit their online application materials very close to 12 noon on submission deadline dates. To avoid heavy server traffic and potential delays, we encourage candidates to submit application materials as early as possible.

Applications received after 12 noon on October 1, 2010 will be considered in Round 2. Applications received after 12 noon on January 11, 2011 will be considered in Round 3. Applications received after 12 noon on March 31, 2011 will not be considered.


Essays for the Class of 2013

As an opportunity to present your distinctive qualities, your essays are an important part of your MBA application. You will be asked to submit your personal statements online with the balance of your application materials. Essays should be single-spaced. Please limit your response to the length indicated.

All applicants must submit answers to four essay questions. The first two questions are required of all applicants. The remaining two essays should be in response to your choice of the next four sub-questions.

Joint program applicants for the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Kennedy School must provide an additional essay.

Essays:

  • What are your three most substantial accomplishments and why do you view them as such? (600-word limit)
  • What have you learned from a mistake? (400-word limit)
  • Please respond to two of the following (400-word limit each):
    1. What would you like the MBA Admissions Board to know about your undergraduate academic experience?
    2. What is your career vision and why is this choice meaningful to you?
    3. Tell us about a time in your professional experience when you were frustrated or disappointed.
    4. When you join the HBS Class of 2013, how will you introduce yourself to your new classmates?

Joint degree applicants:

  • How do you expect the joint degree experience to benefit you on both a professional and a personal level? (400-word limit)

Recommender Questions for the Class of 2013

Recommendations must be completed online. The form includes the following three essay response questions, along with other types of questions.

  • Please comment on the context of your interaction with the applicant. How long have you known the applicant and in what connection? If applicable, briefly describe the applicant's role in your organization. (250-word limit)
  • Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response. (250-word limit)
  • Please make additional statements about the applicant's performance, potential, or personal qualities you believe would be helpful to the MBA Admissions Board. (250-word limit)

Application Components

The application for the MBA Class of 2013 consists of the following:

  • Responses to the four application essay questions (see below)
  • Current resume
  • Three recommendations (must be submitted online)
  • Self-reported transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate academic institutions attended (full- or part-time)
  • GMAT or GRE scores from a test taken January 1, 2006 or later (and TOEFL IBT or IELTS score, if applicable, from a test taken January 1, 2009 or later)
  • Signed HBS Community Values statement
  • Signed Statement of Application Integrity
  • Nonrefundable U.S. $250 application fee (credit card only)*
  • Interview (by invitation only)

*College seniors pay a reduced fee of $100.

Verification

The School will verify application information and reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is any discrepancy between the self-reported information and information provided through verification.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission, an applicant must have successfully completed the following:

  • A degree program at an accredited U.S. four-year undergraduate college/university or its equivalent;
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) from a test taken January 1, 2006 or later. The GMAT or GRE is a prerequisite for admission;
  • Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score from a test taken January 1, 2009 or later, is required for international applicants who attended a non-English-speaking undergraduate university; and
  • Submission of a complete online application for evaluation by one of the decision round deadlines.

Decision Notification

  • We do not release admission decisions via telephone or in person.

Essay Questions for Class of 2013
(entering Fall 2011)

Tell us in your own words who you really are. Answer essay questions 1, 2, and two of the four options for essay 3.

  • Essay 1: What matters most to you, and why?
    • The best examples of Essay 1 reflect the process of self-examination that you have undertaken to write them.
    • They give us a vivid and genuine image of who you are—and they also convey how you became the person you are.
    • They do not focus merely on what you've done or accomplished. Instead, they share with us the values, experiences, and lessons that have shaped your perspectives.
    • They are written from the heart and address not only a person, situation, or event, but also how that person, situation, or event has influenced your life.
  • Essay 2: What are your career aspirations? What do you need to learn at Stanford to achieve them?
    • Use this essay to explain your view of your future, not to repeat accomplishments from your past.
    • You should address three distinct topics:
      • your career aspirations
      • the role of an MBA education in achieving those aspirations
      • and your rationale for earning that MBA at Stanford, in particular.
    • The best examples of Essay 2 express your passions or focused interests; explain why you have decided to pursue graduate education in management; and demonstrate your desire to take advantage of the opportunities that are distinctive to the Stanford MBA Program.
  • Essay 3: Answer two of the four questions below. Tell us not only what you did but also how you did it. What was the outcome? How did people respond? Only describe experiences that have occurred during the last three years.
    • Option A: Tell us about a time when you built or developed a team whose performance exceeded expectations.
    • Option B: Tell us about a time when you made a lasting impact on your organization.
    • Option C: Tell us about a time when you generated support from others for an idea or initiative.
    • Option D: Tell us about a time when you went beyond what was defined, established, or expected.

Essay Length

Your answers for all of the essay questions cannot exceed 1,800 words.

You have your own story to tell, so please allocate the 1,800 words among all of the essays in the way that is most effective for you. We provide some guidelines below as a starting point, but you should feel comfortable to write as much or as little as you like on any essay question, as long as you do not exceed 1,800 words total.

  • Essay 1: 750 words
  • Essay 2: 450 words
  • Essay 3: 300 words each

Formatting

  • Use a 12-point font, double spaced
  • Recommended fonts are Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman
  • Indicate which essay question you are answering at the beginning of each essay
  • Number all pages
  • Upload all four essays as one document
  • Preview the uploaded document to ensure that the formatting is true to the original
  • Save a copy of your essays

Editing Your Essays

Begin work on these essays early, to give yourself time to reflect, write, and edit.

Feel free to ask your friends or family members to provide constructive feedback. When you ask for feedback, ask if the essays' tone sounds like your voice. It should. Your family and friends know you better than anyone else. If they do not believe that the essays capture who you are, how you live, what you believe, and what you aspire to do, then surely the Committee on Admissions will be unable to recognize what is most distinctive about you.

There is a big difference, however, between 'feedback' and 'coaching.' There are few hard and fast rules, but you cross a line when any part of the application (excluding the Letters of Reference) ceases to be exclusively yours in either thought or word.

Appropriate feedback occurs when you show someone your completed application, perhaps one or two times, and are apprised of errors or omissions.

In contrast, inappropriate coaching occurs when your application or your self-presentation is colored by someone else.

You best serve your own interests when your personal thoughts, individual voice, and unique style remain intact at the end of your editing process.

It is improper and a violation of the spirit of the Fundamental Standard and Honor Code to have someone else write any part of your Stanford MBA Program application. Such an act will result in denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission.

Additional Information

If there is any other information that is critical for us to know and is not captured elsewhere, please include it. Examples of pertinent additional information include:

  • Extenuating circumstances affecting academic or work performance
  • Explanation of why you do not have a Letter of Reference from your current direct supervisor or peer
  • Explanation of criminal conviction, criminal charges sustained against you in a juvenile proceeding, and/or court-supervised probation
  • Explanation of academic suspension or expulsion
  • Any other information that you did not have sufficient space to complete in another section of the application (please begin the information in the appropriate section)
  • Additional work experience that cannot fit into the space provided
  • Additional information about your academic experience (e.g., independent research) not noted elsewhere

Letters of Reference

3 Letters of Reference Are Required

  • 2 Professional/Workplace References
    • You must obtain at least one recommendation from your current direct supervisor.
    • If you are unable to provide a letter from your current direct supervisor, include a brief note of explanation in the Additional Information section of the online application.
    • College seniors may use a direct supervisor from a summer, part-time, or internship experience. Alternatively, you may ask someone who oversaw you in an extracurricular, volunteer, or community activity.
    • Your second Professional/Workplace Letter of Reference must come from someone else in a position to evaluate your work—another supervisor, a previous supervisor, a client, etc.
  • 1 Peer Reference
    • An individual with whom you have worked on a team or on a project, in a position equal to your own, should complete this recommendation. This person should not be a supervisor or subordinate. You may choose this person from any of your team experiences: charitable, extracurricular, professional, or other.
    • The peer recommender cannot be your supervisor or subordinate.
  • Drafting or writing your own Letter of Reference, even if asked to do so by your recommender, is improper and a violation of the spirit of the Stanford Fundamental Standard and Honor Code. This action can result in denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission. If the individual insists on this approach, you should find another recommender.
  • Choose individuals who have had significant direct involvement with you within the last few years.
  • Encourage recommenders to write letters specifically for this application since outdated and/or general recommendations typically do not strengthen an application.
  • Strictly academic Letters of Reference generally are less helpful in our evaluation.
  • Your recommenders must submit their Letters of Reference via the online application.
  • We strongly suggest that your recommenders submit Letters of Reference at least one day prior to the application deadline.
  • You are responsible for ensuring that all three recommendations are submitted online before the application deadline.
  • Letters of Reference should not exceed 4 pages, double-spaced, using a 12-point font. Recommended fonts are Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman.

Questions We Ask Your Recommenders

For Your 2 Professional/Workplace recommenders

  1. Please briefly describe your relationship to the candidate, and describe the circumstances under which you have known her or him.
  2. How does the candidate’s performance compare to other well-qualified individuals in similar roles?
  3. What (if any) legacy has this candidate left on your organization?
  4. Describe the most constructive feedback you have given the candidate. Please also detail the circumstances that caused you to give the feedback.
  5. Is there anything else (positive or negative) we should know about the candidate?

For Your Peer/Team recommender

  1. Please briefly describe your relationship to the candidate, and describe the circumstances under which you have known her or him.
  2. Describe how the candidate has generated support from others for an idea or initiative.
  3. What (if any) lasting impact has this candidate left on your organization?
  4. Describe the most constructive feedback you have given the candidate. Please also detail the circumstances that caused you to give the feedback.
  5. Is there anything else (positive or negative) we should know about the candidate?

All 3 of your recommenders will also be asked to appraise you on some competencies and character traits that contribute to successful leadership. ? Leadership Behavior Grid

Online Submission of Letters of Reference

  • Recommenders are required to submit Letters of Reference online.
  • We strongly recommend that Letters of Reference be submitted at least one day prior to the application deadline to ensure that your application is complete.
  • You are responsible for ensuring that all three recommendations are submitted online prior to the application deadline.

Step 1: Register Your Recommender

  • Go to the "Recommendations" tab on the Online Application Form.
  • Enter the recommender's personal information carefully on the registration page. It is extremely important to enter the email address correctly so that your recommender receives the instructions in a timely manner.
  • Read and mark one of the waiver statements on each Letter of Reference.

Step 2: Recommender Receives Email and Logs In

  • Your recommender receives an automated email with instructions to log in to the Online Recommendation.

Step 3: Recommender Completes and Submits Recommendation

  • After logging in, your recommender has access to an exact replica of the Letter of Reference Form and the ability to submit the recommendation directly to us.
  • If your recommender is experiencing technical difficulties, please ask the recommender to contact ApplyYourself Technical Support directly by clicking on the button labeled "Tech Support."

Step 4: You and Your Recommender Receive Confirmation

  • After your recommender submits the recommendation, both you and your recommender will receive an email confirmation.

Step 5: Submit Your Online Application

  • Please make sure that all of your recommenders have submitted the online Letters of Reference before the appropriate application deadline. You should expect that late Letters of Reference will not be included with your application file.

Step 6: Stanford Receives Your Application Form and Letter(s) of Reference

  • Please do not send a hard copy of an online Letter of Reference.
  • You may also track the status of your recommendations via the "Recommendations" tab on the online application form.

Application Fee

  • The non-refundable MBA Program application fee is $265.
  • You may pay via credit card as part of the online application.
  • If you pay by check or money order, please make your payment in U.S. currency and payable through a U.S. bank. Submit the payment so that we receive it before 5:00 PM Pacific Time on the appropriate deadline.
    • If someone else writes the check or money order for you, please ensure that your name appears on the front.
    • Please make the check or money order payable to the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
  • Fee waivers are granted only to university/college seniors receiving need-based financial aid.
  • We do not grant other fee waivers.
  • If you are requesting a waiver, please upload a copy of your school's financial aid award letter in the Additional Information section of your online application.
  • If you do not pay the application fee, we will not evaluate your application or release your decision.

Instructions for MBA Applicants

Resume

Please prepare a business resume that includes your employment history in reverse chronological order, with titles, dates, and whether you worked part-time or full-time. Your educational record should also be in reverse chronological order and should indicate dates of attendance and degree(s) earned. Other information appropriate to a business resume is welcomed and encouraged. The resume should not be more than one page in length (up to 50 lines).

Cover Letter

Prepare a cover letter (up to 500 words) seeking a place in the MIT Sloan MBA Program. Describe your accomplishments and include an example of how you had an impact on a group or organization. Your letter should conform to standard business correspondence and be addressed to Mr. Rod Garcia, Director of MBA Admissions.

Essays

We are interested in learning more about you and how you work, think, and act. For each essay, please provide a brief overview of the situation followed by a detailed description of your response. Please limit the experiences you discuss to those which have occurred in the past three years.

In each of the essays please describe in detail what you thought, felt, said, and did.

  • Essay 1: Please describe a time when you went beyond what was defined, expected, established, or popular. (500 words or fewer, limited to one page)
  • Essay 2: Please describe a time when you convinced an individual or group to accept one of your ideas. (500 words or fewer, limited to one page)
  • Essay 3: Please describe a time when you took responsibility for achieving an objective. (500 words or fewer, limited to one page)

Supplemental Information (Optional)

You may use this section to address whatever else you want the Admissions Committee to know. (250 words or fewer, limited to one page)

Recommender Questions for the Class of 2013

MBA Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation. Professional recommendations are preferred from individuals who are able to speak with certainty about your professional achievements and potential. Recommenders must submit recommendations online. We do not accept mailed recommendations. Recommendations should not exceed two pages each.

Please choose recommenders who are able to provide specific answers to the following questions:

  • How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
  • How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity?
  • Please give an example of the applicant's impact on a person, group, or organization.
  • Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people.
  • Which of the applicant's personal or professional characteristics would you change?
  • Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant.

Academic Records (Transcripts)

Please scan and upload copies of your academic records. Do not mail in your official academic records or transcripts.

Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide an official transcript from each school attended. Any discrepancy between the scanned transcripts and official transcripts may result in a rejection in our decision or a withdrawal of our offer of admission.

Test Scores

The GMAT or GRE is required of all applicants and must be taken before submitting your application. Once your online application is submitted, we will not allow replacement of your test scores. Test scores are only valid for five years; therefore, only tests taken after January 1, 2006 will be considered.

The TOEFL or IELTS is not required for MBA applicants.

Application Fee

MBA Application Fee: $250.00

The application fee is payable by credit card online when you apply. You will be prompted for payment information after pressing the “Submit Application” button. If you wish to pay by means other than a credit card, you must send an email to adcom@sloan.mit.edu at least one week before you intend to submit your online application. College seniors studying in the U.S. and active U.S. military may request an application fee waiver by emailing adcom@sloan.mit.edu prior to submitting your application. The application fee is non-refundable.

Submission of your Online Application

The online application is due at 3 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline dates. You may complete and submit the online application at any time before the deadline. Save your work before moving to the next page and print a copy for your own records.

Why does Kellogg have a two-part application?

Kellogg requires all applicants to request an interview. Submission of Part I of the application allows candidates to request an interview and designate their interview preference (on campus vs. off campus) prior to completing the entire application. Submitting an off-campus interview request does not guarantee an interview, however. The interview may be waived in areas of high demand or remote location. If an interview preference is not selected or if an on-campus interview is not scheduled by the designated deadline, the interview will be waived.

What is required in Part I and Part II of the application?

Part I

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required for admission.

Ideally, one of these recommendations should be written by a current supervisor or manager. The second recommendation should be from someone who can evaluate the applicant’s professional performance as well as their managerial and leadership potential (e.g. a former supervisor, previous employer, client, etc.). If applicants are unable to ask a current supervisor or manager for a letter of recommendation, they should include a brief statement regarding their choice in the Additional Information section of Part II of the application.

The application is not considered complete until Kellogg has received both recommendations. Submitting the recommendations through the school’s online application is required.

Additional letters of support are neither required nor encouraged.
To ensure that the recommenders can be contacted, please apprise the Office of Admissions of any changes to their contact information.


Application Fee ($250)

Candidates using the online application must remit payment by credit card with the application and should not send the fee directly to Kellogg. The Kellogg School will grant an application fee waiver for candidates on active duty military status or U.S. military veterans who have been on active duty within three years of applying. Fee waivers will also be granted to candidates who are currently employed by Teach For America or the Peace Corps, or who have successfully completed their commitment within the past three years. Candidates who qualify for an application fee waiver must submit a formal request, before submitting Part I, via e-mail to mbaadmissions@kellogg.northwestern.edu and provide supporting evidence of their current employment or military status. Military applicants should submit a copy of a valid military ID card or Form DD-214 to verify active duty status within three years of applying. The Kellogg School cannot issue a refund after Part I and the application fee have been submitted.

Academic Transcripts

Kellogg requires applicants to list all colleges, universities and study abroad programs attended or currently attending. For each program, we require a scanned copy of the official transcript or an uploaded electronic version provided by the institution. Transcripts for study abroad programs or transfer programs are not required if the grades are included on the transcript of the degree-granting institution. Self-reported transcripts will not be accepted. Hard-copy official transcripts will be required upon matriculation only. Applicants to the JD-MBA Program who are accepted and opt to matriculate must submit two official transcripts — one to the Law School and one to Kellogg.

Applicants who scan images of transcripts should ensure that all sides and pages of the transcript are included in the scanned document. Be sure the scanned version is legible. Submission of an illegible document will result in an incomplete application and possible delay in rendering an application decision.

If academic records and diplomas are not issued in English by the institution, you must submit both the original record and an authorized verbatim English translation. All records must show the name of the institution, the dates of enrollment, courses taken, units of credit, marks or ratings in each subject, rank in the total class or group (if available).

GMAT

All applicants are required to submit a valid GMAT score. Scores are valid for five years from the testing date to the application deadline to which you are applying. Information about the GMAT is available at mba.com. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not accepted.

The GMAT code for Kellogg’s Full-Time MBA is 6WZ-3J-89.

Applicants should self-report GMAT scores in Part I of the application. The Kellogg School will record the highest score but encourages applicants to report additional scores if the test is taken more than once. If a test date is scheduled after the applicant wishes to submit Part I, the scheduled test date should be recorded in the GMAT Test section of the application. Updated test scores can be self-reported in Part II of the application. Submission of additional test scores after submission of Part II will be accepted, but there is no guarantee the new score will be evaluated at the time the file is reviewed by the admissions committee. Official score reports can be e-mailed to mbaapplicant@kellogg.northwestern.edu.

Please note, an application with no self-reported GMAT score will be considered incomplete until a score is received and will likely result in a delayed notification decision after the designated application deadline.

Candidates must request that scores be sent to Kellogg. Allow three weeks for Kellogg to receive the scores. We recommend that candidates upload the official GMAT score report, if available.

TOEFL

Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English is required of all Kellogg students. Classes and group work demand strong English language skills. A valid TOEFL score is required for all candidates who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. International students may qualify for an exemption if one of the following criteria are met:

1. The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university in the United States.
2. The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university where English was the ONLY language of instruction.

Applicants who qualify for an exemption must provide the URL or exact page of additional documentation to verify English was the only language of instruction.

The TOEFL code for the Kellogg Full-Time MBA Program is 1546.

Evaluative Interviews

Chicago-area applicants must request an off-campus interview unless applying to the JD-MBA program. The interview requirement will be waived for Chicago-area applicants who request an on-campus interview. On-campus interviews are reserved for applicants with less direct access to Kellogg.

The Admissions Committee requires every applicant to request an evaluative interview. The Admissions Committee evaluates on-campus and off-campus interviews equally. The interview provides an opportunity for the applicant to learn about Kellogg. It is also an opportunity for the Admissions Committee to further evaluate an applicant’s level of maturity, interpersonal skills, career focus and motivation. However, the interview is only one criterion used in the admission decision. The interview is conducted based on the resume only. The interviewer will not have reviewed the application prior to the interview. Each applicant must bring a current resume to his or her interview. Off-campus interview candidates must e-mail a résumé ahead of time to the interviewer. All interviews will be conducted in English.

On-campus Interview Request

Applicants requesting an on-campus interview should wait two business days after submitting Part I to schedule their on-campus interview. Interviews may be scheduled by calling the Office of Admissions. On-campus interviews are conducted by a member of the full-time and part-time admissions staff or 1st- or 2nd-year student admissions interviewers. Interviews are conducted Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from September through April and on select Saturdays from late fall until early spring. On-campus interviews typically last 30-45 minutes.

Off-campus Interview Request

Applicants requesting an off-campus interview will be notified of their assignment or waiver via e-mail within eight weeks of submitting Part I. Off-campus interviews are conducted by the admissions staff or members of the Kellogg School’s Alumni Admissions Organization (AAO). Candidates will be notified of an off-campus interview assignment in one of two ways. An e-mail may be sent requesting the candidate to register for a Kellogg Interview Day (KID). The vast majority of candidates, however, will receive an e-mail notification with the interviewer’s contact information. Because applicants may not receive e-mails due to spam filters, we encourage applicants to periodically view the Check Application Status page on the Kellogg Full-Time website. The interviewer’s contact information will be posted on this page when an assignment is made. The candidate is responsible for contacting the interviewer to arrange for a mutually convenient time and location. While our deadline table does not specify a date by which the off-campus interview must be conducted, we strongly recommend the interview be completed within 21 days of receipt of the assignment. We encourage applicants to contact the interviewer immediately upon notification. We recognize delays in conducting the interview may result due to scheduling conflicts. If an interview will take place more than 21 days after the assignment is made or if the interview is scheduled to take place within three weeks of the decision release deadline, please notify the Office of Admissions at aaoadmissions@kellogg.northwestern.edu so we are aware the interview has been scheduled. One-Year and international applicants who apply in Round 3 and request an off-campus interview may be selected to interview by invitation only.

Interview Waiver

The Office of Admissions will make every effort to assign an off-campus interview to each candidate who requests one. However, in areas of heavy demand or remote location, candidates may be offered an interview by invitation only or receive an interview waiver. Waivers have no negative impact on one’s candidacy. Each year, many applicants who receive waivers are admitted to Kellogg. If an interview is waived, candidates should not attempt to schedule an on-campus interview. All applicants may make one interview request only.

Phone Interview

If an off-campus interview request is waived, the admissions office may contact the candidate to schedule a telephone interview. The interview may be used to gather additional information or material that will help the admissions committee make a final decision. Applicants who receive a waiver may not request a telephone interview.

All Interview Requests Are Final

Due to the high volume of interview requests, all interview requests (on- or off-campus) will be final. You may not change your request after submission. If you are unable or no longer wish to interview, please contact the Office of Admissions to cancel your request. We understand that cancellations may take place due to unforeseen circumstances. A waiver will be granted and will not have a negative impact on one’s candidacy. Once you submit an interview request, you must be prepared to complete an interview as soon as it is assigned.

Submission Deadline

Your application must be submitted by 5 p.m. (CST/Chicago time) on the day of the deadline in order to be considered for an application round. This includes receipt of all online and mailed-in materials. Applications submitted after a deadline will automatically be considered in the next round, as long as all materials are included with the application.


Essay Questions

Below are the essay questions for the Fall 2011 application.

1. The Admissions Committee is interested in learning more about you on both a personal and professional level. Please answer the following (maximum of 300 words for each section):

  1. Why are you pursuing a full-time MBA at this point in your life?
  2. Define your short and long term career goals post MBA.
  3. What is it about Chicago Booth that is going to help you reach your goals?
  4. RE-APPLICANTS ONLY: Upon reflection, how has your thinking regarding your future, Chicago Booth, and/or getting an MBA changed since the time of your last application?

2. Chicago Booth is a place that challenges its students to stretch and take risks that they might not take elsewhere. Tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you learned from that experience (maximum of 750 words).

3. At Chicago Booth, we teach you HOW to think rather than what to think. With this in mind, we have provided you with “blank pages” in our application. Knowing that there is not a right or even a preferred answer allows you to demonstrate to the committee your ability to navigate ambiguity and provide information that you believe will support your candidacy for Chicago Booth.

Essay Question 3 Guidelines

We have set forth the following guidelines:

  • The content is completely up to you. Acceptable file formats are PowerPoint or PDF.
  • There is a strict maximum of four pages, though you can provide fewer if you choose.
  • The document will be printed in color and added to your file for review; therefore, flash, hyperlinks, embedded videos, music, etc. will not be viewed by the committee. You are limited to text and static images to convey your points.
  • The file will be evaluated on the quality of content and ability to convey your ideas, not on technical expertise or presentation.
  • Files need to be less than 9 megabytes in order to upload. If your file is too large you may save your file as a PDF and upload your essay.

Application Checklist

Your application will consist of the following items:

Academic Requirements

All international applicants are required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. In light of the Bologna Accord, Chicago Booth will also accept all three-year international degrees to fulfill the undergraduate prerequisite for application to Chicago Booth. You will be asked to either submit official academic records or provide a scanned transcript.

English Language Examinations

For those whose native language is not English, Chicago Booth requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

When to Apply

The minimum graduate admission requirement includes a bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution. Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside the United States should have completed degree programs representing a minimum of 16 years of schooling with at least 12 years at the primary and secondary levels.

Required Academic Records

Applicants are required to submit official records from each academic institution attended after secondary/high school. All official academic records must be issued in the original language and accompanied by English translations prepared by the issuing institution.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants who received their degrees in countries other than the US, UK, Australia, or English-speaking Canada are required to take the TOEFL exam or the IELTS. This includes applicants with degrees from Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and most European countries. Only applicants who have completed a full year of US university-level coursework with a grade of B or better are exempt from this requirement. Residence in the US does not waive this requirement.

Your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 570 for the paper and pencil test, at least 230 for the computer-based test (CBT), or at least 68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). The average total score of admitted students entering in 2008 is 110 on the iBT. To have your exam results sent to Berkeley's Full-Time MBA Program, list institution code 4833 and department code 02. If you have taken the IELTS, a band score of 7.0 is the minimum required for consideration. For fall 2010 admission, we only accept official scores from exams taken on or after June 1, 2008.

Deadlines

Columbia Business School provides students with the option of enrolling in either August or January. Students who begin in August are presented with an internship option after their first year of studies. Following a mandatory orientation in August, regular classes begin in September. Students who do not want or need an internship may consider beginning their MBA studies in January and taking their second term during the summer. A January start may be ideal for students who wish to remain in the same industry after graduation or pursue entrepreneurial interests. The mandatory orientation and classes begin in January.

The two paths, each comprised of four semesters, merge in the fall of the second year of studies to complete the program of electives. The paths are identical in terms of competitiveness of admissions, academic rigor, and student resources.

Early Decision

The Early Decision option is ideal for candidates who have completed their research about MBA programs and are committed to attending Columbia. Early Decision applications are reviewed before Regular Decision applications.

Early Decision candidates must sign the following Statement of Commitment, found in the Honor System section of the online application:

I am committed to attending Columbia Business School and will withdraw all applications and decline all offers from other schools upon admission to Columbia Business School.

Early Decision candidates who are offered admission have up to two weeks to submit their initial nonrefundable $6,000 deposit. Applicants who are not yet ready for this level of commitment should apply Regular Decision.

Deadlines

Columbia Business School using a rolling admissions process. Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are received, and decisions can be rendered at any time. All decisions are final. It is always to your benefit to apply before the posted deadline (11:59pm of the posted date).

January 2011 entry

September 2011 entry

Early Decision application deadline: October 6, 2010

Merit fellowship consideration deadline: January 5, 2011

Regular Decision application deadline: April 13, 2011

Important Notes:

Essays

Essay 1: What are your short-term and long-term post-MBA goals? How will Columbia Business School help you achieve these goals? (Recommended 750 word limit)

Essay 2: Please tell us about yourself and your personal interests. The goal of this essay is to get a sense of who you are, rather than what you have achieved professionally. (Recommended 500 word limit)

Columbia Business School selects applicants from varied business and other backgrounds who have the potential to become successful global leaders. The Admissions Committee seeks to develop a thorough understanding of each applicant before rendering a decision.

    The committee seeks to enroll individuals of strong character who have proven themselves as both leaders and team players. They look for applicants who are well rounded and interesting and who have demonstrated the will and ability to actively contribute to the well-being of their community.

The Admissions Committee seeks to select a group of people representing an extraordinary variety of professions, nationalities, ethnicities, and personal interests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). (Please review our associated guidelines).
  • International students whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). You may be exempted from the TOEFL if you have earned a degree from an institution based in a country in which English is the primary official language and at which the official language of instruction is English.

Interviews

Interviews are not required for admission to Columbia Business School. Once the Admissions Office receives a complete application, a prospective student may be invited to interview. Conducted by alumni and current students who are members of the Columbia Business School Ambassadors program, these interviews are offered around the globe. Interviews are by invitation only and cannot be requested.

Pre-Enrollment Requirements

Prior to actual enrollment you will be required to complete and pass the PreMBA online course. It is designed to facilitate your reentry into academic life by refreshing and introducing you to concepts required in the demanding core and orientation curricula. Several deliverables, which are prerequisites for matriculation, will be due approximately one month prior to orientation. It is estimated that these deliverables will take 25-40 hours to complete, depending upon your background.

All students are expected to arrive on time and attend the entire orientation program.?Any incoming student who cannot meet this expectation will forfeit his or her place in the class.
