Who have more influence on children, parents or classmates? Some believe parents have greater influence on children as parents are the first teacher of children; some claims that classmates exerts greater influence as classmates are the one who share the same value, interest together. Certainly, the influence from both parents and classmates are important and of different aspect. As far as I am concerned, classmates have more influence on the children.
Admittedly, parents have great influence on children when children are very young. It is generally accepted that parents are the first teacher in the growing process of their children. Since the children come into the world, parents teach them how to walk, how to run, how to speak, how to write, and how to tell right from wrong. As the children are so young and do not have much contact with the outside world, the main sources of knowledge and information are from parents, and children often regard parents as omniscient people and believe in whatever they say. Moreover, children like to follow their parents and turn to their parents for advice or help when meeting problem. Thus it is undoubted that parents influenced children greatly when children are very young.
However, when children gradually grow up and go to school, the impact of parents become to decrease. While in the past, children regard their parents as omnipotent and even have plain adoration towards them. However, when they go to school and have a touch with the outside world, this feeling begin to change. Especially in such a time that children are always rebellious and independent, children begin to believe that what the parents think are somewhat out of time and no longer accept what the parents say completely anymore. Compared with parents, children are inclined to communicate with classmates who share the same interest and can lead them to keep pace with the peers and get fresh ideas. Therefore, children begin to come under the influence of classmates and accept the prevailing trend among youngster. For example, children wear clothes or shoes that classmates think fashionable, which may be considered as bizarre clothes by parents.
More importantly, children’s value and world view begin to be greatly influenced by the classmates. Since children often spend time together with classmates and exchange opinions towards life, they are likely to form similar value and world view. For example, children may regard money as the most important thing and the measurement of success because this is widely accepted by youth in today’s society. Then when youngsters choose their career in the future life, they are more influenced by the choices of classmates instead of parents. They are inclined to choose those high-paid jobs even of high risk and high pressure, such as investment banker that every peer is wishing to pursue, while parents want children to choose jobs stable and easy. Maybe only in this way can children feel recognized by the peers.
To wrap up, based on what have been discussed above, classmates have greater influence on children when they gradually grow up. It is classmates that exert great influence on children's behavior and thinking.
