6.22 If you need to discuss upsetting or controversial problems with others, you will use e-mail or text messaging, or use the telephone or voice-messaging. It isuniversally acknowledge that upsetting or controversial problems can not be avoidedin our life. When you need to discuss these problems with your friend, classmates, or colleagues, by which way do you prefer, e-mails and text messageor the telephone or voice-messaging? Most people probably will choose telephonesor voice-messaging, since people in the other side of telephone could understandwhat you saying instantly, especially telephones could enable both of youexchange opinions more efficiently. However, from my standpoint, I do notconsider telephone and voice-messaging can be better than e-mail and textmessaging when discussing upsetting or controversial problems. At thevery beginning, one disadvantage of discussing through telephone orvoice-messaging is that people sometimes can not understand each other verywell through phones, thus discussion through the telephone or voice-messagingwill leave much to be desired. For instance, if a Chinese, whose English isvery poor, discusses with an American through telephone, the results will turnto be very frustrated. There is no doubt that they can not understand eachother, and not mention to discuss some upsetting or controversial problems. However, by using e-mails and text messages the situation can be better, theycan use some tools, such as dictionary, reference books, and internet websites,to help them translate the content of e-mails. By doing so, discussion can besmoothly and efficiently. Inaddition, e-mails and text messages will enable people to have discussionrecorded and help them recall all details whenever they need, especially forsome essential discussions of controversial problems. Take my boss an example;she has been working for more than ten years. She told me that getting into thehabit of discussing through e-mails is very crucial for our career life, sincepeople sometimes are too busy to remember every detail about discussion of controversialproblems. It is conceivable that e-mails and text messages can help peoplerecall those details. So, e-mails and text messages are needed for discussion ofcontroversial problems. Admittedly, there is no denying that using telephones and voice-messages can reflect sender’semotion more clearly and vividly. From their intonation, people can gain moreinformation than reading an e-mail. But, most of time the above information isuseless for people to discuss upsetting or controversial problems. To sumup, I prefer using e-mails and text messages than using telephones and voice messages;because it can help people understand each other better and have discussionrecorded. |
