Admission from Columbia - Accounting PhD

aista, I guess you are in the US, and either already in a PhD Program or did a lot of research and are applying for one. You are absolutely right on this. UFL is very good at theoretical research, and one chinese girl graduated last year from UFL actually got a very nice placement - Carnegie Mellon, because CMU's strenghth is also in theoretical staff. But I am interested in financial accounting and empirical analysis of capital markets, two more senior professors in empirical analysis are leaving UFL, making it less attractive, so I would go for Columbia. I also interviewed with Wisconsin-Madison last Friday. They told me the feedback from professors were positive, but they could not make any further offers until the end of this month. By now, Wisconsin should have completed all the interviews, so if you have not heard anything from it, you can start focusing on other schools. Cornell will make final decisions next Monday. I am on the second-round interview list of UT-Austin, which will take three students this year and has made one offer so far. So you still have a chance there. UCLA is kinda of slow. Have not heard anything from Rochester, but that is a good school for accounting.

Congratulations!!! Do you mind telling me a little more about your background? Undergraduate / graduate major?  GMAT score? Prior research experience? Just want to get some sense of what kind of people those top schools are after.

dear apple01, thank you for the info. i am acually intersted in theoretical staff. that's why i want to make some point among all the congs cmu did give me an offer(conditional on my going) and i am admitted to columbia too. ucla did call but they are waiting for graduate school for giving admission. i am not applying for austin, wisconsin, so i don't know their progress. what other school are you applying? in terms of financial accounting, capital market valuation, columbia is actually one of the best. michigan might be better but they (i think) are in the progress of interview now.

oh, i forgot rochester. i guess they are in review now coz i got an email a couple of weeks ago. they were dicreminating my gre computer test score. so i decided to ignor the school though i know it is good in accounting and my favorite journals are there....
