Recently at Fixpoint Group we have received a lot of requests from people looking to apply to MBA programs. We thought we would share some top tips for essays for Chinese students applying to MBA programs. This will help you stand out as a candidate.

When applying to graduate programs in Economics, schools all ask the same question. However,  every B-School asks a different set of questions with different length requirements. The goal of this is largely to prevent you from reusing the same essay for each school.

Even though questions are different, what the schools want to hear from you is the same. They want to hear you tell them a story about who you are and why an MBA is the right thing for you today. Each essay should contribute to the overall story which is: You did amazing things in the past. You want to do amazing things in the future. But right now you need to get an MBA.

Admissions committees want you to prove that you will be good at two critical things:
1. Technical mastery of the complicated mathematics, finance, and other concepts that will be used.
2. Ability to contribute to group work and lead teams.

As a Chinese person, you already have an advantage on the first item. B-Schools know that the education you have is good and that you can do the work without any problems. You already have the good test scores to prove that you are brilliant. But B-Schools will be worried about the other two items, because there is a reputation that Chinese students only know how to work alone and do not socialize with other cultures. Almost all the work you do in B-School will be with other people. It is important that you focus on #2 as much as possible and let your grades, school, and test scores do #1 for you.

In proving that you are good at #2, try to think of examples in your life and in your career where you were a leader. Do not focus on job titles. Many times leadership can come outside of your job. If your examples of how you deal with people come from outside your job, this is actually a good thing, as it shows that you are the sort of interesting person who can contribute in unique ways.

Of course there are other factors that, as a Chinese student, you will need to be able to discuss, such as your ability to manage difficult workloads, and, if you are applying to schools in Europe or Asia, the ability to work with people from many different cultures.
