but用法的疑问

这里but 的用法

牛津词典讲说But有三种用法
1.conj.  used for showing a contrast             eg. Tom went to the party, but his brother didn't.
2.prep： apart from except除了...之外          eg.nothing to eat but bread and cheese.
3.adv. only仅仅                                          eg. we can but try

这道题意在对比 laos的 地广人稀    用法是第一种用法，表对比
Ron大神 解释是固定结构 x but y
但是如果是x but y 不就意味着这里是prep.的用法  但表示除了。之外，语意又不对呀？
but在这到底是  作conj. 但是省略了主谓？ 还是 作的prep. ?
but后面跟的sth 不是完整的主谓宾 这样可以么？
我的疑问是but一般我们看到的用法都是作并列连词，引导的句子。 这样跟 n. 可以么？
这道题同我以前做的一道PREP的题目让我有点混淆

我记得 类似 after, before, since这个连词后面可以直接跟  -ed 或 -ing 但是不能跟 n.                     
但是but好像不能跟 -ed /-ing.                        (  <-------   有木有这个规定呀？   是我记错了么？）

所以一看到BUT后面接的不完整句子，我就直接排了。。。遇到这道题就悲催了
请牛牛们指教  我的理解是哪里出了问题啊？

我的理解仅供参考啊：
这里的but是一个连词，整句话看来也符合前后对比的意思：Laos has a land area …… but a population……
关于but的用法，我觉得but后面不一定要跟完整的主谓宾。
而且我记得but的用法比你列出来的要多，建议找一个更完善的字典再看看。
