语法是句意为王，began his translation of the Iliad,是说开始translation这件事，强调的是翻译这件事，而began translating of the Iliad 是强调翻译这本Iliad，语意上还是有些不同的。Pope's translation of the Iliad, not the Iliad itself, took seven years to complete.
that指代是a work, a work又是作为translation of the lliad.
如果不去掉it, 整个句子把that带回去就是：

it和translation重复了，所以必须要去掉it
这道题我关于为什么D选项不正确，非常的不理解，看了上面的解释仍然不是非常的理解
我先说一下我的理解
AP began his translation, a work that took him severn years to complete and that SJ pronounced the greatest translation in any language.
如果选择D的话， 关于It 我是这样想的，a work that SJ pronounced it as the greatest translation in any language.
it 指代 a work 这有什么不妥？
我的理解如果此处用translating the lliad, a work...，那 a work作为lliad的同位语会显得逻辑不通，因为后文提到take him seven years to complete，因此此处a work指代的必须是translation本身，而不是原作lliad，DE可以被直接排除。
我理解的it不能加的理由是a work that...and that literary critic SJ pronounced...中两个that实质都为从句引导词，第一个是主语从句，a work took him；第二个为宾语从句，SJ pronounced a work the greatest translation....如果加了it，那就变成SJ pronounced a work it the greatest...所以D是错误的
