，v＋ing 到底修饰宾语还是主语

(A) a method to protect (B) as a method protecting (C) protecting (D) as a protection of (E) to protect 很典型的一道题目，也看到cd上很多 牛牛探讨过了 还是稀里糊涂的 我想问问正确选项c，protecting到底是修饰military equipment 还是主语animal－hide shields？ 又 看到语法笔记里说主＋系＋表，v＋ing的话，这个v＋ing是修饰最近的名词的，若是主＋谓＋宾，v+ing的话v+ing是修饰主语的 是这么区分的嘛 以后遇到，v＋ing 到底怎么判断他是修饰什么的呢 么么 谢谢大家

主系表，ving结构中ving作为对前面句子的补充，其逻辑主语应该和主句主语一致。

可以这么理解：

首先 A NOUN and its MODIFIER should TOUCH each other.
其次：Manhattan里说有四种exceptions to the touch rule，其中一种是The modifier is part of a series of parallel modifiers, one of which touches the noun
然后：linking verbs是一种parallel maker, A is B, A和B必须平行
最后:  animal-hide shields with wooden frames (A) were essential items (B), protecting....

因此protecting是修饰主语animal-hide shields with wooden frames。

另外从意思上说ving表结果，to do表目的。主句意思是说A were essential items，那后面补充说明的当然是应该是表示A为什么是essential的咯。
再另外，a method of/for doing；似乎没有a method to do
