Selling short is dangerous. If you are dabbling at selling short, you are no different than someone dabbling at lion taming. Quote from financial expert.
What is short selling? Short selling means you view a decline in a certain stock, which is somehow contrary to most of other investor’s expect. You are counting on the decline of the stock price. You tell the brokerage firm to short the stock for you. Essentially, they lend you some stocks and you sell them. If the price does decline, you purchase the stock back and return to the brokerage firm. The firm earns commission on the transaction.
But there are two obvious question lie in this transaction. The first is that, if the price goes up, you have a theoretically infinite loss to pay. If you buy certain stock rather than short them, all you can lose is when the price down to 0. But in short selling, there is no cap for price.
The second problem is that if you are selling in a small firm, it is highly possible that the firm do not have the liquidity to lend you the stock because they might not have a client holding that certain stock. Thus, you selling procedure may fail.
Short selling can be a lucrative investment option. It has a lot of allure because it lets you play the other side.
