请问下，they指代的是人还是酒？判断的依据是什么？
还有时态是怎么判断的？为什么不能用完成时？

To sell的用法：
可以指卖家本身：The stores sells many books.
可以指被贩卖的物品：The books in the store sell well.

关于这题helping verb的补出：
•        原句想用的是一个unstated but assumed repetition of a word：The wines have been priced to sell，and they are （selling）
•        当要使用这种结构的时候，要记住想要被重复的东西（例如sell）一定要和先前出现过的形式一模一样！（不能有任何时态上或者语态上的变更）
•        The wines have been priced to sell，and they are（sell）；这样的话很明显这句话就错了

还是有一点不懂，是怎么判断出来they指代酒还是指代人的？
我开始理解的是they do （reduce the inventories） 后来才看到它想表达的是they do （sell）
这里要根据什么来判断？

曼哈顿里说了，我们需要借助语法（如平行）和语义来判断指代：
If the intended antecedent of a single pronoun is clear (e.g., by virtue of parallelism and meaning), and if there is no other reasonable antecedent, then don’t worry if there is an unreasonable antecedent somewhere else in the sentence.

我的理解是：
1. 两个独立的句子中间用分号隔开了，因此 they 无法跳跃那么远去修饰前面的 vintners
2. 分号后面是用 and 连接的两个平行的句子，第二个句子的主语（代词 they) 从平行上看指代第一个句子的主语比较合适
3. 语义上来说，说 酒实际上卖得好( their wines do sell), 比又重复说 (vintners do cut prices)，要合乎逻辑一些

版主，关于sell 的重复我还是不太明白，为什么 and they do 这句话就可以确定 是省略了 sell 呢？

个人经验哈！一句话里的同一个代词为避免混淆向来只指代同一个东西。
