Topic: Should the government support artists or should artists support themselves?
Have you ever seen the news that a poor painter had to give up his style or a singer displayed her composition in subway? It is no doubt that arts plays an important role in our society and culture, however, we also acknowledged that arts need an enormous investment and artists have to suffer hardship before they became famous. The issue of whether the government should support artists has drawn widespread attention, some people argue that the authorities should published related policy to help artists overcome their adversity, such as establishing a fund, reducing the tax and cutting unemployment rate of them. As far as I’m concerned, this proposal is somewhat inapplicable in temporary societies. Among countless factors that influence my consideration, below are the most principal ones.
First, the artists is just a kind of occupation or job, it is as same as the workers or the accountants, which provides labor or intellect to earn money and respect, and thereby the artists should not be put on a special position and acquire privileges from the government. For instance, one of my friends is a piano player, after he graduated from a music school, he also faced the same question as other piano players that his salary was too low to maintain his life, let alone support his music career. But he did not complain why the government did not support him, on the opposite, he found a part-time job which was teaching children the piano. Because he was a skilled piano player and a good teacher, and then he got many students and tutor fees which addressed his adversity and supported his music career. He achieved his music dream without the help of the authorities.
Another important aspect is that although an artist cannot resolve his hardship alone, he has many choices besides for asking help to the government. Nowadays, there are more approaches to raise funds or supports than decades ago, such as loan from bank, risk investment or person-to-person finance. In past time, a dancer who wanted to open and run an dancing studio or club cannot get loan or other funds from bankers smoothly, so he had to wish the government to help him, whereas in now days, if the dancer has a good business planning, he can talk to the bank or other financial organizations directly and get enough supports to operate his own business and art career.
The last but not the least, operation of the authorities is always inefficient. Furthermore, an artist want to acquire the help from the government often should fill countless application forms and be oversee by the government. This is a case in the point, the government of my country invested enormous money on a movie. The director of this movie was inspired and hopeful at first, because he can use the money to hire established actors and to make remarkable 3D movie. But after some weeks, he found the authorities put many strains on his creative production, ironically, an office of the government which is not familiar with the film industry took the responsibilities to review and monitor his production. Finally, the movie became a joke in my country.
To put it in a nutshell, given that our societies have many more effective and efficient ways instead the government to support the artists, meantime the artists also have the abilities to address hardship by themselves; therefore I reinforce my standpoint that artists support themselves.
