big financial companies will have a list of univeristy, called target unoffically, that they go for Campus talks and recuirtment and etc., at which they heavily recuirt their front Office / important roles there (in which they never admitted offically, but verified for ages on varies society network source like linkedin & fb & etc.)
this difference is even more important in sense that the big company have much more resourace to go through the visa application process, while the smaller one doesn't.

this list varies from location to location, (slightly less) from company to company.
say for London, they are in general known as the 6 UK and 5 EU School
for US as far as i know is something around top 15.
[this is exactly the logic why top 15 MBA in US rarely have schloarship, but much more common for those after, i.e. ROI issue]

the value of an MSF is to get into a top enough univeristy to get the reputation for interview, have some handon experience on financial modeling,
rather than intellectual/technical training indeed........financial modeling is nothing challenging academically but need time to train up one's sensitivity.

for me that's a poor idea for a general chinese student to go for studying MSF, which is targeting at general finance job as the technical requirement of such type of job is not really that high, and what's the most important key skills is soft skill: one have to be presentable, outstanding, fluent in english, and etc, which is surly not the compartive advantage of international student to local US one.
it's always good for those capble to go more quantitative as international student are in average way better in mathematics and programing and etc when compared with those US-educated, and thus company have more incentive to go through the troublsome process of finding a visa for an international.

I don't mean that Rochester (and etc.) is a bad good, indeed Rochester was(is?) a powerhourse in research in finance.
They do have a solid circulum (according to MSF standard), but that's not the key point for studying an MSF.
[if you want something solide, go for a financial engineering / financial economics instead]
of course still need to have good teaching quality to ensure one can handle the financial modeling stuffs well, not as that one from JXU
but the key point for pay a huge amount for MSF is employment........

不是columbia, 沒那個成績更加不捨得那個學費.

美制之下, 精算是根本不需要碩士, 要的是考試, 大量的考卷.
這正正是為何美國top uni沒有精算碩士的原因.


其實actuarial master我會主要分三類,
1. master in actuarial science:
教的就是精算basic paper, SoA lanauge, exam P, FM, MLC, MFE, C, VEE*3, in IFA lanauage就是CT1-8
基本上就是學士水平, 俾精算鄰近科目的人轉field用
美制讀完還是要自己再考一次, 根本係呃錢+混文憑, 讀個金工/統計碩士, 自修考卷學得更多;
英制就會有paper exemption, 拿(混)了碩士學位順手當是考了paper, 是在職精算師一個不錯的選擇
2. master in actuarial management:
主要就是insurance risk management, SoA的FAP, IFA的CA's, 讓本身在精算track上的人再進修
同理, 英制可以用黎exempt CA1, 2, 還有master thesis都好似可以用黎頂一份ST
美制呢? 想用degree來exempt paper?? 行開啦, 老老實實的考卷吧啦.
3. mphil in actuarial science:
research based, 不是很多學校有, 因為大多都歸入了statistics (or finance/insurance)
也不是用來做career preparation的

1/2, 在英國好些學校是並存的, 印象中cass, imperial, edinburgh and etc....當中分別很清楚.
3我就只在waterloo見過, 他們的actuarial很強大 (他們的MAstsc可以算是1+2, 但居然係可以拿英制的exemption的.....)


話說回來, 各位說the names matters的, 也可以考慮他們的CVN, 可以省下生活費之餘, 又可以保留自己的職業(學位證甚麼的我不太清楚....)
