解答：决定谓语单复数的差别的主语到底是rising inventories还是inventories，如果是前者，那么主语是动名词词组，谓语是单数，如果是后者，那么rising是形容词，inventories是主语，谓语不用单数。那么重点就在rising是作为形容词存在还是作为动词存在，如果是作为动词存在，那么这个动词就是rise。我们知道，在做上升这个语义讲的时候，rise是不及物动词，也就是后面不加名词的，而显然这里加inventories了，所以应该不是动词而是形容词。那么inventories应该是主语，谓语不应该用单数。综合而言，这个题考了两个单词，一个是rise，一个unaccompanied。GMAT语法不考词的意思，但是会考词的属性，不过这类题不会太多，所以大家不用太过担心，只要把常见单词的属性积累记忆就可以了。

Rise本身做动词是不及物动词，肯定不存在rise sth的用法。这里rising sth中的rising只能是形容词，故核心词是sth.
