my essays

97. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teachers should be paid according to how much their students learn. Give specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

For many years, people in and outside of education have argued about how teachers should get paid. Some students’ parents complain that they paid too much for the teachers while their children didn’t learn a lot from them. Some even suggest teachers should be paid according to how much their students learn. I disagree with this because, in my opinion, it is unfair to pay teachers based only on students’ outcomes and performance.

Firstly, it is very difficult to measure the unmeasurable. Teachers play many roles at school—planning the class schedule, teaching during the class, baby-sitting during the break or after school. Teachers’ responsibilities are to teach us not only knowledge from the book but also how to become productive citizens. Also consider all the problems that teachers encounter on a daily basis, not to mention the work they put in at home.

Secondly, different students have different ability to absorb knowledge they learn from their teachers. There is always a lack of objective observers and objective criteria to evaluate teachers’ performance. For example, both student A and student B are the students of teacher C. Student A got an A in the final exam while B only got a D. How can we evaluate C’s performance of teaching?

I can understand that people want a change in the traditional teacher’s pay system by seeing teachers get paid by how well they teach rather than how long they have been teaching. However, we should introduce a rational change instead of an unfair evaluation system based on students’ grades, such as Merit pay and Knowledge- and skills-based pay to make a better pay schedule to improve the teacher’s performance and effectiveness.

182. Many people have a close relationship with their pets. These people treat their birds, cats, or other animals as members of their family. In your opinion, are such relationships good? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

Human beings have a long history of keeping pets. This has a lot of advantages, and in my opinion, it is good to have a close relationship with pets.

To begin with, pets are human beings’ good friends. Some people feed birds, cats, dogs and other animals. The reason for people to keep pets is for the affection, companionship and fun that it provides. Wouldn't anyone want a partner who worshipped them, always welcomed them home? Yes! Pets can be that one. Some of them even have human qualities. Let’s take dogs as an example. A dog can give you lifelong loyalty and be trained to guard your house and protect you. There are some real stories in which dogs saved their owner’s life in an emergency.

Furthermore, feeding pets helps kids to learn how to take care of others. Those children who were brought up in pet owing homes are more caring and sensitive to other people’s needs. Moreover, pets are kids’ good partners. When parents are busy with housework, children can play with pets and then they don’t feel lonely. In addition, pets are seniors’  good company. They make old people feel needed.

However, we need to realize that there are some disadvantages if people ignore communicating with other people but keep to their pets. Pets are different from human beings. They cannot talk and respond in a human’s way. They should not be the only source with which we share our emotion.

All in all, I hold a positive attitude to being close to pets. If you also like pets, keep them and have fun with them.

179. What are some of the qualities of a good parent?

Of all the jobs in the world, being a parent may be the trickiest. Children are often hard to understand. Sometimes, no matter how hard the parents try, it seems that everything they do is wrong. No one can make parenting easy. How to be a successful parent? What are the qualities of a good parent?

The first quality is to be caring and loving. Parents should know how to love their children. There are many ways to show them that you care about them. One is to make the home a safe place to live. This safe place should be full of joy, harmony and peace. Husband and wife should not argue or fight in front of their kids. A happy parent is a better parent. Another one is to take care of your children by cooking them nice meals. A good parent is sensitive to their children’s needs.

The second quality should be supportive and understanding. Build a strong bridge between you and your children. Communication is very important between these two parties. When children make mistakes, you try to find ways to guide them without getting angry. The key to understanding children is to identify their feelings. Take time to listen carefully to what they are saying and invite more discussion.

Being honest and responsible is also an important quality of a good parent. When you realize you have made a mistake, admit to it, apologize for it, and correct it. Parents play a vital role in the development of their children, so be a positive role model, and use a good example to teach your children to be a good person in society.  Being a responsible parent, you should make sure that you can provide sufficient education for your children. Being a trustworthy parent, let them know that you are someone who they can laugh with and someone who doesn't laugh at them when they are trying to tell you something serious.

Good parenting pays off. You work at becoming a good parent so that your children will turn out to be strong, caring adults. Bad parenting develops children who are more likely to be moody, angry, immature, and low in social ability. Good parenting develops children who are more likely to be happy, capable, responsible, and enjoyable. Which kind of children do you prefer to live with? Of course the latter.
