As an admitted student to the MS in Business: Information Systems program, we are sure you have some questions as you begin to prepare to join the Smith School in the fall.  As a new member to our community we would like to welcome you to join us for an upcoming on-line chat.
chat with us on Wednesday, January 29 from 9:00am-10:00am EST.

一个小时的Online CHAT 信息量好大。这里给大家分享一下,要顶哦~
Ø  There are no specific pre-requisites that you need to completebefore you arrive. However, you may be advised to take an online course to fillany gaps on your background.
Ø  It typically takes students 9 months to finish the program. Ifneeded, it can be extended to 12 or 15 months.Students finish their courses ineither 10 months (1 Fall and 1 Spring semester) or 16 months (Fall, Spring, andFall) semesters.
Ø  On placement, here are some of the companies that have recentlyhired our students: Accenture, Ernst & Young, Bank of America...studentsare also placed at smaller local companies. we have students placed in roleslike program manager, developer, tester, analyst, etc. Generally, students whohave strong backgrounds or strong interest in more technical roles receive moreoffers
Ø  Internships are not mandatory, but there are definitelyopportunities, if you do the program in 16 months, or 3 semesters.
Ø  graduate assistantships are an option for students. If you areinterested in a graduate assistant position, go to https://ejobs.umd.edu andapply for graduate assistant positions. Look at this now, but most positions will be available later on thisspring or over the summer
Ø  OPT is valid for 1 year after graduation.
Ø  Ideally applicants uploaded their their financial documents whenthey submitted their application but if you did not, you can send them to me atldagnall@rhsmith.umd.edu and I can forward them to the appropriate office
Ø  we will review scholarships as applications come in and as of rightnow, we still have funding available
Ø  You typically have 1 month after your formal admission to make yourdeposit. YOu cannot be formally admitted to the University of Maryland withoutsubmitting proper financial documentation
Ø  The basic coursework is the same as last year, and as posted on thewebsite, in terms of content. However, the structure of the program is beingchanged starting Fall 14 so that most classes will be 3 credited, full-termclasses (currenty they are 2 credit 7 week classes). WIth this change, some contentis being shifted across classes, but the 3 core areas and the basic contentcovered in them remains the same.
Ø  if you can contact me separately at ldagnall@rhsmith.umd.edu and Ican track your shipment to see if it has arrived yet.Anyone is welcome to emailme your financial documents at ldagnall@rhsmith.umd.edu and we will processthem immediately. Please do not mail the documents as it takes significantlylonger to receive your documentation
Ø  The gold assets would never be reflected in the bank statements. goldassets are not considered liquid assets. Essentially, you need to show cash assets.  If you convert the gold assets now and canshow it as cash, that would work. If is shows funds that are cash, it is fine. Butif still needs to be liquidated, then it will not be acceptable. loans are onlyvalid if they are already in your bank account and are in cash. these fundsneed to be cash or funds that can be withdrawn immediately
Ø  I have also heard that the Program Structure is very rigid and notall the electives mentioned on the website are available to the students sothey have been forced to take courses which they never wanted. Can pleasesomeone throw light on this? Answer:the electives listed have all been offered, however it is true that not every elective may fit with every student'sschedule. SO for example, if you finish the program in 1 year you will haveless flexibility than if you take longer.
Ø  there are many locations near campus to rent a room or a fullapartment. There is no graduate housing on campus ,but there are multiple  campuses shuttles that run to localapartments, and there are apartments within walking distance.

Ø  Class profile for the Fall 13 class was about 40% students from China,40% from Inida, 20% US. About half had work experience before starting, onaverage 1.5 years.  Most but not all hadtechnical undergraduate degrees. we are looking for a class of about 50-60 forfall 2014.  We also expect to see adiverse class with international student percentage of at least 50%.
Ø  you can apply for the dual-degree MBA/MSIS once you are amatriculated student in the IS program, yes.

Consulting, developing, business analytics are all jobsgraduates have done, as well as program management.
Ø  I think there are a few ways the comapies will know our courses: 1.we have relationships with several companies and so they are already familiarwith our program, 2. the curriculum is public and 3. you will of coursecommunicate with employers to let them know about your specific coursework andstrengths.
Ø  The tuition will not be approved by the state until June or July, but we expect in state tuition to be about $1500 and out of state to be about$1,800 per credit and the program is 30 credits. Again, these numbers will notbe confirmed until this summer, but this is an estimate

It was listed in yourapplication and is also available online athttp://www.international.umd.edu/sparkplug/common/images/ies/CertificateOfFinances-Graduate.pdf

Ø  I recommend bringing whatever you need.  Some basic school supplies are cheap rightwhen classes start, but as for clothing, it may be easier to bring a few thingsso you do not have to worry about buying it when you get here
